2019 KING OF THE HILL MEET REVIEW
King of the Hill Challenge is our annual all abilities meet for October. It is a unique meet in that there is a 50 Freestyle challenge event for all swimmers aged 13 & Over. They continue to race the 50 Freestyle until only 1 swimmer remains. It narrows the field down by time, rank, and rounds of open, top 64, top 32, top 16, top 8, top 4, and top 2 for the win! TTST has a strong history on the boy’s side winning it 4 years straight from 2014 – 2017. 3 out of 4 of those years went to event record holder and TTST alumni Cooper deRyk. Kaikea also won the 2016 year while Cooper missed the event that year. We have never won both the girls race for “Queen of The Hill” and boys race for “King of The Hill”, but that all changed in 2019!
With Cooper deRyk now swimming at Utah, the TTST boys 2019 win rested on the shoulders of Kaikea. He would be racing a very talented boy from the Nevada side of the mountains named Luke. Kaikea won all 6 rounds handedly, but Luke found another gear in the last 50 for the championship! The final race came down to the fingers with Kaikea winning the 2019 King of the Hill for TTST boys in :20.83 to Luke’s :20.86!
2019 TTST girls’ team was fast and not just the winner! We ended the meet with Sydney Elwell becoming the first ever TTST Queen of the Hill. TTST girls had so many fast swimmers it came down to TTST vs. TTST in the final round with Sydney vs Claire! Claire in the previous round of 4 set an all-time TTST girls record of :24.07 to Sydney’s 13-14 TTST girls record of :24.14 to make the championship round of 2 TTST vs. TTST. In the that race Sydney out touched Claire to become 2019 Queen of the hill but both of their fastest swims from round 4 remained untouched, and Claire ended the competition with the fastest 50 time at the 2019 King of the Hill with her :24.07 from round 4! It was such an exciting event on the girl’s side. By the round of 16 on Thursday morning we had 6 of 16 Truckee girls in the round and all of them under :26 seconds. Congratulations to them by time rank: Claire, Sydney, Emma, Caitlin, Kensington, and Callie! I have no doubt we would have had our other Sydney make 7 in that round if she didn’t have a bad start early in the round of 32 that resulted in a disqualification. Now 2019 goes down in the TTST records as our best King of the Hill Challenge legacy yet! Congratulations to our 2019 King & Queen of The Hill Kaikea Crews, and Sydney Elwell.
TTST Team Records Broken:
Claire Rumzie: 15 – 16 Girls 50 SCY Free :24.07 & TTST Open Record!

TTST Standout Performances:
The 2019 King of the Hill made this one of the hardest selections for these categories I have had. That is a good thing with so many highlights from across all entries. One of my favorite moments of the meet was watching the Manova sisters race and warm-up in their Kitty Cat caps. I believe they started a trend!
Regional Novice Team Girls 10 & Under: Audrey Manova for dropping times in all her races she repeated from Beat the Freeze in September!
Jojo Wurzelbacher for dropping personal best time performances in 7 of 7 races! Even more impressive the times were all big improvements. Keep up the work Jojo.
Josh Williams for dropping personal best time performances in 4 of 4 races. Josh had a great attitude, and it showed with a perfect meet!
Hayley Hynes swam to personal best times in 3 events 50 Back, 50 Fly, and 200 I.M. giving her the Age Group All Star Girls swimmer of the meet!
Walker Egide dropped best time results in 3 out of 4 events! His best times came in the 100 Free, 25 Breaststroke, and 50 Breaststroke. All of them are team leading times for the season and his age as well!
Kyla Mccarthy Smith for posting new best time in all 5 of her events. They were big time improvements as well! 50 – 200 Free, and the 50 Back and 50 Breast. Good job Kyla!
Caitlin Smith is our newest member of the :24 second 50 Freestyle Club! Caitlin now joins a total of 6 currently active girls that swim faster then :25 seconds in the 50 Freestyle for TTST. They are in current order of speed, Claire Rumzie, Sydney Elwell, Emma Purdy, Kensington Elwell, and Caitlin Smith. That is a quick 200 Freestyle Relay with alternates!
TTST Swimmers of the Meet
John Lanza blew up at the meet. He posted 7 of 7 personal best times. John took a whopping :23.95 seconds off his 500 Free! He listened and went after our coaching suggestions. Great job John. Congratulations on being the swimmer of the Meet!
Thank you parents and coaches for supporting another great King of The Hill Challenge! The TTST sprint legacy continues........
