NM swimmers at Western Zone Open Water Championships

Did you know that USA Swimming’s Western Zone holds an Open Water Zone Championship every year – very much like Senior Zones and Age Group Zones for pool swims? I dare say not many of us here in New Mexico did. But this year that is changing. Thanks to the Coronado Swim Association and Coronado Rough Water Swimming the championship was held back on September 29, 2019 at a new venue – the Pacific Ocean. Or, more accurately, the San Diego Bay side of Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado, CA.  This year the event offered 1k, 3k and 5k swims – with the 5k event being a qualifier for USA Swimming’s 2020 Open Water Junior Nationals in April 2020.

New Mexico Swimming was well represented by 18 swimmers from CAQ, Lobo and RACE. A total of 217 swimmers competed, from 11 of the 17 LSC’s in the Western Zone. Special congratulations go to Nolan Arnholt (CAQ) and Hannah Meek (CAQ) for winning their age groups in the 3k event. To top that off, Alexandra Threhane of Lobo finished third in the Women’s 15-16 5K and qualified for Open Water Junior Nationals. Way to go Alexandra!
