In 2010, Fran was taking part in the FINA 10k Open Water Series. Fran had won the second to last race in Mexico. The following weekend in October of 2010, Fran and the rest of the field competing in the series headed to Fujairah, United Arab Emirates on the east side of the country. The race took place in the Gulf of Oman. Tragically he would not finish the race. Fran’s body was found by divers, underwater by the final buoy, approximately 500 meters from the shore finish.
Changing of Regulations
Following Fran’s passing, FINA established a task force and set regulations surrounding water temperature. FINA OWS 5.5 states that the water temperature can not be below 16 degrees Celsius (60.8 F) or above 31 degrees Celsius (87.8 F). As BAC continues to raise money in support of the Fran Crippen Elevation Foundatiion, we are asking for contributions of any size.
While supplies last, BAC Baseball Caps are available for anyone making a donation of $25.00 or greater. Please see Tristan at BAC to make a contribution. Please make checks payable to BAC (or cash). Collections will continue at Rutgers University during the BAC Jim Wood Memorial Winter Invitational Meet.
