ASC Roars Into 2020 Like A Jaguar at GBSC

The new year brought some significant changes to our team, but the resiliency of our swimmers shined through at the GBSC Sub-Zero Meet. We swam with spirit, joy and a fierce resolve which led to a high percentage of best times even when we were not rested and while many have been fighting illness in recent weeks. It is easy to think of swimming as an individual sport because the best time earned belongs to one person, but the reality is that it is the team and the team’s environment and culture that makes best times and great swims possible. Training side by side with others who diligently put their very best efforts and focus forward every day gives each individual the opportunity to improve and to help others to do the same. Caring for each other’s highs and lows gives us a swim family who “gets us” and who we can turn to when challenges in the pool (and even in other areas of life) arise. When we band together as a team we are mightier than we are alone, and as a team we achieved several team relay records this weekend as a result, including the Boys 10 and Under 400 Freestyle Relay (Bohm, Van Laanen, Walter, Coppens), the Girls 15 and Over 200 Freestyle Relay (Domnick, Selissen, Phillips, McNicoll), the Girls 15 and Over 200 Medley Relay (Domnick, McNicoll, Selissen, Phillips) and the Boys 10 and Over 400 Medley Relay (Coppens, Van Laanen, Bohm, Walter). We had two new individual team records, Sienna in the 1000 FR and Hallory in the 200 FL. We had a number of new state qualifying swims from current qualifiers, including Parker Bohm with new state cuts in the 100 IM and 50 BK, Barrett Van Laanen with a new state cut in the 500 FR, Trevor Dietzler with a new state cut in the 200 FL (SCY) and 200 FR, and Erin Schuch with new state cuts in the 100 IM and 50 BR. We were also happy to have Sunday visits from our high school boys who stayed to support their teammates, take pictures, and hang best time snowflakes higher on the wall than any age grouper could. Once again we received compliments from other teams on our focused energy in warmup, our enthusiasm, and of course our fast swimming. What other team this weekend can say they had a team conga line? Yes, this group really is as special as they appear.

As we head into the final leg of the short course season, remaining open meet entries for all members include our home meet on February 14-16, FDL Regionals on February 21-23, and then our end of season awards banquet is planned for March 17th.
