Championship Meets: What you need to know!

Let’s talk about the upcoming Championship (end of season) meets!  MN Swimming does a great job of making sure that all of our swimmers are taken care of; from our beginning swimmers to our elite swimmers there is a meet for everyone to compete.  First thing to know is that eligibility for almost every championship meet is time based.  Meaning swimmers need to meet a certain time standard in order to be eligible to participate in certain meets.

For anyone new to swimming the championship season is a lot different than most other sports and for beginning swimmers we don’t really want to be consumed with times, we want them to enjoy the sport and have fun with their teammates and friends.  There is plenty of time to worry about achieving time standards!

Championship meets are where our team really comes together as one.  Regardless of which group your swimmer is in the common goal is to perform well and see all the hard work pay off at the end of the season.  We expect all swimmers to compete in their highest qualified meet!  The Piranhas are and have always been one of the smallest teams in the state, but we take pride in bringing a large group of swimmers to every meet while competing against teams who are two-three times larger than us.

As far as end of season meets, time standards are what we use to determine eligibility.  So, at the local level we break it down into a series of Championship meets beginning in mid-February and ending in mid-March (sometimes late March depending on which meets we travel to), in the summer these meets are mid-July to early-August, each meet becomes a harder meet to qualify for.

WHAT ARE THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS?

All end of season championship meets are generally time based qualification.  A list of all the different time standards can be found  here. Below is a list, in order, of which meets are offered at the end of the season.  Remember dates and locations change each season.

NOVICE FINALS IN FARMINGTON - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14 - REGISTRATION DUE FEBRUARY 3

    •    This is a great meet for our newest swimmers or swimmers with limited meet participation.  It will give our swimmers the feel of an end of season meet!

    •    Eligibility: Any swimmer with who has never swum in a swim meet before or is has a time in an event that is not yet a Bronze time is eligible for this meet.

    •    This is the only end of season meet where a swimmer who has not competed in an event or meet can participate.

    •    Most likely, only swimmers in our Novice or Age Group Prep practice groups would participate in this meet.

Minnesota Achievement Championships (MAC’s) in Northfield:  February 22-23

REGISTRATION DUE FEBRUARY 11

  •    This is another great meet for our newer swimmers or swimmers who have just aged up to the next age group.  Aging up from 8 to 9 or 10 to 11 or 12 to 13 can be a rough transition and the times get significantly faster each time a swimmer ages up.

    •    Eligibility: If you have competed in an event you are eligible for this meet as long as you don’t currently have an MRC time (Silver or Gold).  If you have any MRC time in an event you may not compete in that event.

    •    If a swimmer earns an “MRC” times in any of their events they would then be eligible to compete in the next weekend’s MRC meet!

    •    Note that the location of MAC’s changes from season to season.

Minnesota Regional Championships (MRC’s) in Edina: February 28 - March 1

REGISTRATION DUE FEBRUARY 17

   •    The MRC meet is probably one of the most fun meets that MN swimming offers; they are always heavily attended, our swimmers go fast, and it is a meet with a lot of energy!…it is also the last chance for swimmers to earn their way to the State Championships!

    •    Eligibility: Only swimmers with a “Silver” or “Gold” times are eligible to compete in that event at MRC’s.

    •    If an athlete earns any “CH” times they are then eligible to compete at the state championship meet!  Also, any swimmer who wins their event is eligible to participate at the state championship meet!

    •    Note that the location of MRC’s changes from season to season.

Senior STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: March 5-8 @ the University of MN

    •    The state championship meets are the highest level meets in the state of MN!  They are a lot of fun with tons of energy and very fast swimming.  The State meet is an amazing experience!

    •    Eligibility: Only swimmers with “CH” times or swimmers who won their event the weekend before at MRC’s are eligible to participate at State Championships.

    •    Senior State is a Prelims/Finals meet for 15 and over swimmers.  Meaning swimmers who place in the top-24 in the morning make it back to finals to determine the State Champion in each event!

Age Group State in Rochester: March 12-15

  • AG State is the highest level meet for 14 & under swimmers in the State.  Like Senior state, there is a ton of fast swimming with a lot of great energy.

    •    Eligibility: Only swimmers with “CH” times or swimmers who won their event the weekend before at MRC’s are eligible to participate at State Championships.

    •    Age Group State is a Prelims/Finals meet for 13-14 swimmers.  Meaning swimmers who place in the top-16 in the morning make it back to finals to determine the State Champion in each event!  It is a timed-finals meet for 11-12’s.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH MEET(S) MY SWIMMER IS QUALIFIED FOR?

There are several different ways to keep track of times.

1) On USA-Swimming’s website you can access the times database and plug in your swimmer’s name.  It will bring up all of their times! INDIVIDUAL TIMES SEARCH - TIMES DATABASE

2) You can pull up a times report of your swimmer from our website by following the steps below.

1    Log-in to your Piranhas team account

2    On the left hand side click on “My Account” => “My Meet Results”

3    From here there are many different ways to filter your swimmers times.

3) From here on out I will post an updated times list by swimmer which will show what standard they have in each event.  It will be posted in Short Course Yards and in Long Course Meters.  If your athlete has Bronze or no listed standard they are eligible for either Novice Finals or MAC’s.  If they have Silver or Gold they are eligible to MRC’s.  If they have CHAMP they are eligible for the State Meet.  (See attached reports for updated times through January 28)

Talk to your group coach if you have any questions about which meet to attend.
