Nose Creek Shark School NEWSLETTER – January 2020

Welcome to our third newsletter of the swim season! If you do not receive this newsletter via email, please contact me as the website is our main means of communication and we would like to ensure all families are receiving the information that is sent out.

BATHING SUITS AND EQUIPMENT

If your swimmer has shoulder length hair or longer, they must wear the NCSA team cap as this will interfere with their focus and skills.  Please also ensure your swimmer has proper fitting goggles prior to the start of each class. Your help with this is much appreciated!

All swimmers should have received their suit, cap and t-shirt. If your suit was the incorrect size, you can exchange the suit as long as the tags are still attached. T-shirts can also be exchanged.

SWIMMER OF THE MONTH

A swimmer from each group will be recognized by their coach as “Swimmer of the Month”. We will be awarding athletes that stand apart from their group for exceptional effort, attitude and achievements. Each Swimmer of the Month will receive a swim cap and a free PANAGO pizza compliments of Country Hills Panago Pizza to recognize their efforts.


COACHES

AIRDRIE

Robin Loyola – Fundamentals

The progress this group continues to make is fantastic. We have moved on from body position and strengthening our kick to our catch (underwater part of each stroke) and timing. We are slowly building our meters as well.

January’s swimmer of the month is Savannah Hoffman . Every workout she attends, she is engaged, listens and applies corrections. She has improved immensely since our first day. Congratulations Savannah!! Much deserved!

Zac McLeod - Stage 3

This month my swimmers and I have worked a lot on the introduction of turns. Turns can be a complicated task when first learning but eventually becomes automatic through repetition in a swimmer’s career. Turns are what can make or break a fast swimmer, so learning at a young age can get our swimmers the practice they need. Along with our turn work, we have continued our 4x50 kick. They have improved body position and leg strength with this drill.

My swimmer of the month is Hudson Doiron !

Hudson has shown great improvement from September till now and has been very fun to coach.

Jordyn Gagnon – Stage 2

 Happy New Year! We started off 2020 by increasing the distance that we have been swimming during practice, from 25 to 50 meters. Additionally, we have been very vigilant in practicing circle swimming, as well as working on our lane etiquette. Furthermore, we have also put on emphasis on our freestyle pull, ensuring that our fingers stay together, and that our thumbs enter the water first, with our pinkies exiting the water first. The swimmers have been working especially hard this month, and I am very proud of their efforts. Keep up the great work swimmers!

Stage two Airdrie’s swimmer of the month is Kennedy Thompson ! I have had the privilege to coach Kennedy for a second season, and it has been a pleasure to watch her grow and build confidence in her swimming. Kennedy is an extremely hard worker, who focuses heavily on improving her technique. Additionally, she is a kind-natured individual, who always treats her teammates with the utmost respect. Kennedy is absolutely lovely to coach, and I look forward to working with her for the rest of the season. Congratulations Kennedy!

Caleb Sharpe – Stage 1

This month my swimmers have been doing a great job on swimming longer distances. We have been working on swimming full laps of freestyle and backstroke. They are consistently doing their ready positions and are working hard on breathing on their side every third stroke. Great work!

Rhett Rosgen – Stage 1

This month we have continued to focus on back and free with body position and head position being the main focus. We are progressing our ready positions, streamlines and flutter kick. Great work swimmers!

Ana Ortiz – Stage 1

What a fun month this January has been. This month the swimmers began to swim full lengths (25m) and have been adjusting wonderfully. Although it does take more effort, the swimmers have been working hard and strong and it shows. We’ve continued to practice breathing in freestyle, making sure they turn to the side and don’t hold their breath, and getting their arms out of the water as opposed to dragging them. For backstroke, we’ve been working on body position, the swimmers even got to balance ducks on their foreheads, which they had a lot of fun with. It’s been a great month, good job swimmers!!

 January’s swimmer of the month is Sephala Lutzer ! She is a great swimmer who always shows up with a big smile on her face and ready to swim. In the water, she listens very well and follows instructions closely. Her effort and attitude are greatly appreciated! Good job Sephala! 


CALGARY

 Katelyn Stuart – Stage 3

I hope that all the stage threes had an excellent break from swimming after our fun meet in December. I got to hear lots of stories about everyone's holidays and it was fantastic to see how excited the stage threes were to be back at the pool. 

 Freestyle has been the main focus of January, not only the technical aspects of the stroke but also building confidence in swimming longer distances and faster paces. The stages threes have had many opportunities to swim 50s and some extra speedy 25s! Flip turns were also introduced in January and the stage three group will continue to build their skills as we work on our turns in February! 

SWIMMER OF THE MONTH: Alexis  Livingston

Alexis always puts 110% of her effort into swimming to the best of her ability! She isn't afraid to ask for feedback and when she does she is willing to listen and make adjustments. Alexis is also a kind and optimistic leader within the stage three group. Her work ethic, coachability, and personality make her a pleasure to coach. Keep up the great work Alexis!

 Erica Meller – Stage 2

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a good break. This month the focus has been on building up endurance by swimming more meters. The swimmers are doing more consecutive 50’s (2 lengths in a row).  Also, they are now doing underwater push offs in streamline position. I am trying to ensure that each length is stated with a proper push off. We have also spent time learning dolphin kick and have been implementing this into the push offs. The swimmers are also learning how to do flip turns and they are progressing really well. Soon we will be practicing flip turns when we do 50’s. Great work this month, I can't wait to advance the new skills into February!

 The Calgary Stage 2 swimmer of the month is… Maeve Martin !

Maeve comes to practice with a positive attitude and is excited to swim. Maeve works very hard to better her strokes and is always looking for ways to improve. She is enthusiastic and ready for a challenge. Maeve always puts her best effort forward and is a fantastic role model for my group. Awesome job Maeve!

Aimee Bereziuk – Stage 1

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. Since the New Year, swimmers have started swimming full 25 meter lengths. So far I’m very impressed with how they’re adjusting. I’ve started writing sets that are a little longer and they’re doing great with the extra work added. They have been being productive and working hard every time. For the month of January I have the honour of picking swimmer of the month. The swimmer of the month award goes to Adrien Chen . Adrien always comes to practice with a positive attitude and is always ready to work hard. He’s a great role model to his peers. Good job Adrien, keep working hard!

 Cadence Carleton  – Stage 1

For December and January our group worked on a variety of different skills, along with applying them to our 25 meter practices. Our kicking as a group has been advancing quite nicely, along with putting it together with our arm work. Overall, everyone is looking great and quite confident in swimming 25 meter lengths! As we continue on through the season, our group will be working on push offs, and further development in the strokes. A reminder to parents that dry land starts at 4:15 if you can make it! 

 Sophia Greco – Stage 1

This month we welcome our new swimmer Isabelle. All our swimmers have been doing great. We have continued working on our freestyle and backstroke. We have to make sure we keep our legs straight and mountain arms. All our swimmers have been doing great, excited to see them all next month!!

 Michaela McFarlane – Stage 1

 Starting off the New Year our focus for this month was head position. The goal was for the swimmers to better understand where their head should be during different strokes. The drills we used to practice this objective was with sidekick for freestyle, and using paddles on the swimmers faces for backstroke. This was to encourage them to keep their head still as possible. I am very impressed by my swimmers, they are constantly improving and always come to class excited to swim. Awesome work this month, I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish next.
