As always, the health and safety of our swimmers, families and staff comes first at the Rec-Plex. Today the city decided to close the entire facility, effective immediately, with a reopening date of Saturday, April 4th. This decision was made based on the recommendations of the CDC, the Federal Government and a law passed yesterday evening by the St. Charles County Government. Therefore, practices for our team will be suspended for the two weeks following this week’s Spring Break Week. We also need to keep in mind that this is an unprecedented time for our country and the world, so projected timelines could be extended. Along with practices, the team has decided to include our March 29th Intrasquad meet and our annual Awards Banquet to our list of cancelled events.
A few weeks off in your swimming career is a temporary diversion. How many times have athletes been out of the water for several weeks due to an injury or family trip only to come back stronger? Normally, we take a weeklong break in March to give both our coaches and athletes a well-earned rest. Many families take additional time off for their Spring Breaks as well, resulting in a couple of weeks off. This year extending our break a little is appropriate given the COVID-19 outbreak.
Beyond swimming fast, we understand the social network the team provides is a huge part of many of our members’ lives. It is important to remember we are doing this for a part of the population that is not as resilient and safe from this threat as we are. Great teammates do things for the bigger picture and a larger cause. We need to do that now.
We will keep you updated on when it will be possible to resume practice.
Thank you for your support and patience on this. We appreciate having all of you on the club.
