BSC Team Weekly Update
“There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them.
But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there.”
Paulo Coelho, The Fifth Mountain

Good Morning Bend Swim Club Swimmers and Families!

I hope that this newsletter finds everyone safe, happy and above all healthy! Hopefully, you are all taking a bit of a step back and spending time with your family and loved ones. By doing so I think that will help us all put these uncertain times into a bit more perspective. As most of you know, the earliest we will be able to get back to any sort of practice schedule will be on April 28th. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of this time right now.

As part of my attempt to keep our community connected, I will be sending out a weekly team newsletter. This newsletter will contain not only important information regarding practice, schedule or other administrative topics, but I will also try to include different items about swimming, sport, or life in general that I think may be of interest to you all. Here’s one small story before I get on with some other things. I have been back in Portland since the end of last week. There’s a lot of work that my girlfriend needs help with the yard and around the place and I was going to use the break to help out anyway. Now I may have a little longer to make sure everything gets done but I digress. One morning, about 10:30am, we heard a knock at the door, followed by both of our dogs howling and barking to alert us to a possible home invasion. Turns out it wasn’t an invasion but the neighbor from a few doors down. While maintaining at least a 6-foot distance our neighbor asked us if we wanted to be put on the list he was making (on his iPad) in case there was any sort of emergency on the block. He informed us that once he was finished he would email us his list (which we got later that afternoon) with contact information from the rest of the neighborhood.

We’ve lived in this neighborhood for almost 5 years now and never before has anyone stopped by and asked anything like this. I am sharing this story because I think it’s a beautiful example of how a community (even if it’s just one block of a neighborhood in NE Portland) can come together and do something positive for each other. To help make everyone feel that these uncertain times are a little less cloudy. That despite whatever difficulties we may be facing alone, we have committed to helping those around us if they need it and we are able to do so. It’s my hope that we can find that sort of community with each other at the BSC over the next month or two and then beyond.

Spring/Summer Group Assignments:
We have finished the move-ups and posted the groups on the website here . If you have any questions, please ask me or Coach Shane. We have gone over the list several times but sometimes even we make a mistake or two so if anything looks off or your name isn’t listed please check with us right away and we will make sure to get things resolved.

Zoom Meetings:
I know that both Coach Shane and myself have been discussing the idea of having online Zoom meetings with some of the groups. We will try to keep these relatively short (under 1 hour) but the more we discussed the idea the more we felt that it would be a good way to stay connected and have an online component to our swimming program while we can’t get in the water. Your group’s coach will be reaching out to you all when these are going to be held.

Swimmer Education: The Underwater Dolphin Kick

Here’s a short activity with the help of Jay Friend, the Head Coach of the Missoula Aquatic Club about the underwater dolphin kick and how it changed swimming forever in the 1980s. Please take some time to participate!

That’s all for this week. Have a great Monday everyone!
