What the Y is doing:

We've shifted our programs and our focus, so the Y can continue to do what we do best: stand as a partner and a leader in community action and support.

One area we’re particularly concerned about is the negative impact of public school closures on low-income families. We have partnered with the Community Foundation’s Covid-19 Local Relief Fund to provide childcare for essential personnel.

We also have a significant number of seniors in our community, the population at greatest risk from COVID-19. Those seniors with limited incomes face even more challenges – they must also worry about how they will eat, access medical care, or get basic supplies with so many public service agencies closed due to the pandemic. So we’re working with local agencies to help seniors who need their assistance. Our staff is also personally calling elderly residents to check in and let them know they’re not alone during quarantine.

We’re working with area groups to create a database for grassroots community support. From 9am to 5pm Monday – Friday, area residents can call the Waynesboro YMCA phone number if they need help during the crisis, or if they want to volunteer.  We’ve also established a text NEEDHELP or VOLUNTEER campaign to connect those in need with those that can help.

COVID-19 has changed life for all of us, and every single person has been impacted. Families we see every day are struggling to stay afloat during this crisis, and we’re doing everything we can to support them. But it truly does take a village – and we need you now more than ever before. There are so many in need – but there are plenty of ways YOU can help.

How you can help:

Many SMAC families have already reached out and joined our VOLUNTEER database.  Please text VOLUNTEER 885.444.9622 or NEEDHELP if you need help.

Thanks to some incredibly generous local businesses, residents, and SMAC Boosters, we’ve set up our first-ever online auction, with proceeds going towards our efforts in Waynesboro and the surrounding area. SMAC items will be posted by the end of the month and the auction is open through April 30, and all are welcome to participate! We’ve got an incredible array of items for every interest and budget – plus it’s a great way to help local families while observing social distancing! Visit our auction site here and share with area families:

Whether you find something perfect on the online auction or make a donation on our website, your gift truly has the power to change lives. And for our existing membership, we invite you to consider maintaining your monthly dues during COVID-19, or even increasing them if you’re able.

The Y is also starting an Employee Assistance Fund and will have more information on that in the coming days.

What do we do with my dues?

We are manning the phones Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm.  If you’d like to put your membership or program fees on hold, simply call us at 943-9622.

We invite you to consider maintaining your monthly dues during COVID-19, or even increasing them if you’re able.

We will treat drafts during our closure as donations towards our Covid-19 Relief efforts.
