Senior Spotlight: Anna Harshaw, Lenoir Rhyne University

Senior Spotlight: Anna Harshaw, Lenoir Rhyne University

In the coming days, we will be recognizing our GCY Seniors and starting off with our college bound signee's!  These kids had their short course season cut a little short, and we want to give them a speacial shout out heading into long course!

Today's Senior Spotlight is on 2020 Senior Anna Harshaw, who is committed to swimming at Lenoir Rhyne University for the Fall of 2020, congrats Anna!

Here are some of Anna's extraordinary accomplishments in her swimming career (not all inclusive):

  • YMCA National Time Standard, 100 Breast
  • YMCA National Time Standard, 200 Breast
  • Qualified for 6 separate YMCA National CHampionships
  • Earned first spot on GCY A Medley Relays going into 2020 YMCA Nationals
  • Won Green Valley Gator's Camberly Holiday Team Spirit Award
  • Made her first JO cut soon after joining GCY then then had an amazing swim at unexpectedly finalled that same NC 14&Under Champs
  • Finaled at very recently in late February at the 2020 NC Senior Champs in Charlotte!
  • Greensboro City Champion in 2017 in 2 Green Valley Relays, multiple podiums/medalist in the 50 breastroke, including 2nd 2 years in a row in the same age group!

"If swimmers were grouped by size not age, like wrestling, Anna would probably be a National Champion!  She has incredible strength and power in the water and on land, can do more pullups than any female swimmer in known GCY history, 32 legit ones and regularly over 20!  She's also a remarkable student with 4.2 gpa, and very involved in all sorts of community activities. Anna's passion outside of the pool is women's self defense... when she became President of the Women’s Self Defense Club at her high school, the club had 6 members and rarely met. Since she has taken over, they began having weekly meetings with sometimes over 20 students attending, and she helped launched special workshops including one that was planned for our YMCA in downtown Greensboro, NC. Her passion for women’s safety has always shown through, and it’s amazing to see her dedication to that cause inspire others and make our community stronger and more aware of this issue.  She's also regularly seen timing at our meets including the 2020 JO's we hosted - thank you Anna you have made a huge impact and you will be missed!"
