Update: May 7, 2020
Hello team! There have been lots of meetings, but nothing definitive yet. In past years, we usually started our summer season by mid-May. We are hopeful to have a start date before too long. This week, the Mandan Aquatic Center announced a tentative opening date of June 1. On our end, we want to get commitments from facilities, coaches, and a practice plan in place before we announce any details.
The Board has formed a Covid Action Committee which includes Coach Alicia, a Board Member, and a Parent-at-Large. Every two weeks, Coach Alicia has meetings with twenty other coaches from North Dakota and South Dakota to share news and ideas. The Board has attended a number of virtual town halls hosted by USA swimming at national and local levels.
You can expect that practices will look different this summer once we can get back into the facility. USA Swimming and North Dakota Swimming have canceled all summer championship swim meets and as of right now, we don't know if local meets will be permitted. Also, we will likely be restricted as to the number of swimmers in a lane and at practice. This means we will not have the flexibility that we have had in the past to let swimmers and families "drop-in" for any practice, but will need to assign practices and have firm commitments. We will have more details on this once we have a start date.
I firmly believe that youth sports are important for our children's physical and emotional health. The exciting part about no championship meets this summer is that we can focus this summer on technique and building a very strong aerobic and anaerobic base that will prepare our swimmers for a dynamic fall season. We hope you will join us this summer at the pool, whatever shape it takes. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.
