The St. John’s Legends Swim Club ( SJL) invites applications for the permanent, full-time position of Head Coach. Reporting to the Club President, the Head Coach is responsible for the Club’s operational functions- both on and off the pool deck.

The position is located in St. John's, the Capital City of Newfoundland and Labrador. The City is the perfect combination of big-city feel and small-town charm. It is one of the oldest and most easterly cities in North America

SJL is a not- for profit organization which supports over 250 swimmers in both the development and competitive streams. The club swims out of three pools, one of which is the only, 50 meter, long-course competition pool in the Province.  SJL has established itself as the leading swim club in the Province and committed to running a top program in Atlantic Canada. In 2019, the club set 74 provincial records in individual and relay competition, and  SJL has had swimmers qualify for high level competitions such as Ontario Junior Internationals and Canadian Swimming Trials. The club has three swimmers qualified and preparing for Olympic Trials in 2021.


The role of the Head Coach has three primary aspects.

  1. Leading the competitive stream which fosters athlete development to achieve success on the provincial and national stage.

  2. Provide oversight for the Development stream of the club. The current and future success of  SJL is built on the development stream of the club and is critical to our success.

  3. Ensure all administrative functions are running effectively including but not limited to, financial stewardship, parent relations, and community engagement.


The Club is looking for a candidate who can enhance an environment which allows swimmers to develop skills and attitudes both on and off the pool deck. Essentially, we want our swimmers to become “good humans” and rise to their swimming potential.

Attributes and Expectations:

  • Demonstrates exceptional leadership skills and respectful communication with all stakeholders.

  • Demonstrates excellence in developing high performance swimmers.

  • Develops, executes and oversees development program for all team coaches

  • Provides mentoring and in-service training to coaching staff

  • Possesses expert knowledge in all technical aspects of competitive swimming

  • Helps establish and manages criteria for movement between groups and set a developmental strategy for entire club

  • Submits monthly coach’s report to the Board of Directors and actively participate in Board discussion in all aspect of our operation.

  • Ensures effective administrative controls and fiscal accountability

  • Promotes team spirit and good sportsmanship both on and off the deck

  • Partners with and advises the Board of Directors regarding the development of the  SJL’s objectives, club policies and governance processes


  • Holds a Canadian  NCCP Level 3 accreditation or equivalent

  • NLS, CPR and First Aid certification

  • Chartered Professional Coach

  • Current member in good standing with  CSCTA

  • Satisfactory certificate of conduct and vulnerable sector check (must be recent within the last 6 months)
