Teaching Tuesday: Positive Self Talk

As we all wait for pools to re-open and practices to resume a somewhat normal schedule, a

lot of swimmers might feel frustrated and anxious to get back to training in the water. It is always

important, but especially during this time, to practice positive self-talk and be kind to yourself when

you are feeling overwhelmed by negative thoughts. In this edition of the Teaching Tuesday, we

focus on positive self-talk techniques and tips to relieve stress and frustration.

Some positive self-talk tips include:

  • Have a special positive word or short phrase that you can say to yourself when certain sets get challenging or feel difficult to overcome
  • Learn to internally dispute your negative thoughts - replace certain thoughts with helpful and positive ones, and be disciplined
  • Identify what moments or situations cause self-doubt or negative thoughts and be prepared for what you’ll say to yourself before they happen
  • Talk to the positive people in your life and see what they do
  • Write down at least 3 things that you are grateful for each morning (swimming or non-swimming related)
  • Write down at least 3 things you know you do well every day (swimming or non-swimming related)
  • Write down at least 3 things you are proud of yourself for (swimming or non-swimming related)
