PNS COVID-19 Update (June 11, 2020)
Update on the Activities of Pacific Northwest Swimming and USA Swimming
Dear Coaches and Club Leaders, Swimmers, Officials, and Families:
With Governor Inslee’s June 9 announcement of Staffed Water Recreation Facilities Modified Phase 1 COVID-19 Reopening Requirements, all clubs are working with the facility operators to implement the detail planning required to actually open the pools. Hopefully, that will be successful in short order although some pools may decide not to open. If you get a chance, thank Alice Godfred, Head Coach of OCA and David Orr, Head Coach of Cascade for their efforts to spearhead the engagement of the stakeholders and to educate the folks at the Governor’s Office as to the preparedness of competitive swimming.
The 2020 annual House of Delegates meeting is now just over two weeks away. Please mark your calendar and plan to join the virtual meeting:
HOD Meeting Saturday, June 27, 2020, 10:00 AM
Each club can have three delegates which should include: a coach, an athlete and an (non-coach, non-athlete) individual. Those individuals will need to be identified prior to the meeting. The meeting is open and other guests are invited to attend as well, but they will not have a vote for any of the decisions made during the meeting.
The agenda for the meeting and the ballot for the open Board positions are both posted in the HOD entry under the Meet Calendar tab on the PNS website.
In addition to the actual HOD, all delegates and others are invited to attend the preparatory session:
HOD Practice Meeting Saturday, June 20, 2020, 10:00 AM
While almost all coaches and others are now familiar with Zoom and Zoom capabilities, active participation in the meeting will require use of the “Raise Hand” functionality. The process for delegate identification (naming) will also be introduced. Appropriate naming will simplify the recognition and voting processes thereby speeding the meeting. Finally, the HOD meeting will also use some of the more advanced Zoom capabilities such as polling and breakout rooms. In addition, the Election Runner application will provide the functionality for secure, anonymous voting for the elections. The practice session will review all these capabilities and provide an opportunity to test them. In addition, questions regarding any of the topics that will be discussed at the HOD such as the By-Laws and policies can be addressed as part of the session.
The session is estimated to last approximately 1 hour.
The next meeting of the PNS Board of Directors is scheduled for next Monday, June 15, at 7 PM via Zoom. One of the agenda items for discussion is the second round of funding for clubs via the Club Assistance Program. The discussion will determine the schedule for the Phase 2 distributions.
USA Swimming and the USA Swimming Foundation previously announced grants totaling approximately $1.4M that were awarded and distributed in May. The second round of USAS and the Foundation funding will be focused on reopening efforts. The current, tentative schedule is that USAS will survey clubs as to reopening status in late June. Those results will provide the basis for the application design and more streamlined award process for round 2 of grants. The round 2 application and award processes are currently estimated to occur in mid-July. The Foundation and USA Swimming hope to award about $1.5M in that phase.
Everyone please stay safe and stay healthy. Questions are always welcome and, like suggestions, can be forwarded via the message capability on the website. Please continue to practice appropriate social distancing and good hygiene so that the recovery can proceed as rapidly as possible. We hope to be able to “see” you at the HOD on June 27 and then at a pool soon after!
