Swim Team News - June 13, 2020
Good news for a change!
As you have probably heard, the pool is now open for appointment only adult lap-swimming. It’s exciting that we’re moving ahead (slowly and safely) and trying to “get back to normal”. This is the first step in that direction.
What does this mean for the swim team?
The GSSSL has communicated the following:
Based on new guidance from the state allowing for limited opening of pools during phase 1.5, the GSSSL board would like to provide some guidance to member pools regarding the start of swim team practice.
We believe that each pool must make their own determination about their club’s readiness to meet the published guidelines and to safely run practice for swimmers. Any club that feels that they are ready may begin practices as long as they follow all published safety guidelines. It is the responsibility of the club, not the swim team coaches, to publish their safety plan. The board wants to emphasize the importance of following essential safety practices outlined in the state guidelines.
I’ve worked with manager Corey and the Aqua Club Board on a plan that will allow our kids to get back in the water. We’ll be taking baby steps with this, emphasizing first the safety of our swimmers and staff. Be prepared for change. Each week may look different as we adjust and modify our workout structure.
We’re planning on a “soft opening” next week (our last week of evening workouts), limiting participation to our older (13+) swimmers. This will allow us some more time to put additional systems and procedures in place that will help us to run a successful, safe workout with our younger swimmers. We’re hoping to have all swimmers in the pool by the week of June 22.
At this point we don’t anticipate any “traditional” meets, but the North Coaches are working on some creative “virtual meet” ideas.
Practices this year will be much different. They’ll probably look like small semi-private lessons. We’ll have plenty of coaches on deck and every swimmer will receive a lot of personal attention. You will not see any packed lanes like in past summers. Our first week of Senior practice will have only 1-2 swimmers per lane. As the weeks progress, this may increase, but only if it can be done in a safe, healthy way, following state and local guidelines.
We also eventually plan to start a dryland component for our swimmers. We’re lucky to have Monica Edwards ( yes, related!!! ) to help put this together. Monica helped design and has taught the dryland program for Cascade Swim Club for the last three years. More details about this program will be forthcoming.
Our practices will be much smaller, and at this point by reservation only. The Aqua Club Team Unify website “job sign up” has been tweaked for this purpose. No drop-ins will be allowed. Our goal is to get kids in the water at least 2-3 times per week, with dryland options on days that they are not scheduled to swim. All of this does depend on our registration numbers and state/local guidelines concerning swimmer load and percentage pool capacity. Once again, be ready for a fluid, flexible schedule.
Our current procedures for adult lap swim will carry over, with some modifications, to the swim team. Once again, be prepared for adjustments to these procedures as we move forward.
To maintain social distancing, we are limiting the size of our swim workouts. Swimmers will be asked to not enter the facility until your scheduled workout time. Swimmers will also be asked to leave promptly when finished. This will allow us to have transition time between sections.
Every individual must sign a waiver before they may enter. This includes children under 18 which require a parents/legal guardian signature. We will have copies at the pool, or you may print and bring your own.
There is a hand sanitizer station at the entrance. We will not have locker room access. Please come changed and ready to go.
You will enter by the office on the ground floor. At the entrance you will give in a signed waiver. Per Governor Inslee’s order you must be given a Covid safety briefing. This is required for each usage.
When you enter the pool, we have benches for members to put anything they bring with them. You may then go to your assigned lane. There are marks on the pool deck to indicate social distancing. Please always maintain 6 feet distancing.
NO SHOWER USE AT THIS POINT.
When your time has completed, we are asking all members to leave as quickly as possible through the upstairs exit. This will lessen congestion at the entry point.
Coaches will follow state/local/and facility safety guidelines. We are asking that swimmers wear face covering coming and going.
Only the swimmers signed up enter the facility during your registered time. At this point, parents and siblings of swim team participants will need to stay outside of the facility. Best choices are to drop off and pick up, or go for a walk, or stay in your car!
No facility equipment will be available for swimmer use.
Next Steps -
Register your child for the swim team. Swimmers that didn’t participate last year should arrange to take the pool test first. (Swim one length of both freestyle and backstroke unassisted. Tread water for 30 seconds). Details on how and when we’re administering the swim test are forthcoming.
13+ swimmers should reserve two practice spots for the week of June 15-19. You must commit to the week of practice, and then select “job signup” to choose your two workout times. We’ll have a similar procedure in place soon for the week of June 22-26.
New swim team families probably have a lot of questions. We usually have an orientation night in the clubhouse to help you acclimate and ask questions. This year we’ll try to cover things during our full club “new member” orientation zoom - this Monday at 7:30pm. You can also email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
