Proud Supporters of the Legends

We are very excited to announce that our new Head Coach, starting later this month, will be Roman Ramirez!

Roman’s lifelong love of swimming took root quite early when he started his athletic career at the age of six.  Years later, Roman progressed to the point where he was a pre-selection team member for Mexico’s entry at the 1984 Olympics.  As a young man, Roman completed an engineering degree but quickly learned that his true passion was swimming.  He embarked on a coaching career that saw him found and lead one of Mexico’s pre-eminent swim clubs (with well over 1,000 members!), before moving to Canada in 1997.

For the past 20+ years, Roman has coached at swim clubs in BC, Manitoba and Ontario.  A certified Level 3 Coach, Roman was most recently an Assistant Coach with the Mississauga Aquatic Club, where he was responsible for the High-Performance Age Group (HPAG) swimmers.  Before his time in Mississauga, Roman spent eight (8) years as the Head Coach of South Western Aquatics (“SWA”) in Tillsonburg, ON.  While at SWA, Roman led multiple swimmers to national-level podium finishes.  He also played a role in the development of Evan van Moerkerke, a young SWA athlete that went on to swim for Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Roman’s love of swimming is a family affair.  His wife, Ara Vasquez, is a swim coach who has worked alongside Roman in Mississauga and at SWA.  Their daughter Roxanna is an accomplished swimmer, as a 3-time silver medalist at Junior Nationals.  She is currently a student-athlete at the University of Wyoming.

We expect Roman to start his new role before the end of July.  Please join us in welcoming the newest member of the Legends family: Coach Roman!

We also are excited to announce that Christopher Mercer has been promoted to fill the role of Director of Swimming Operations and Assistant Head Coach.  Christopher will take over the administrative duties that he has been doing informally for some months now.  Christopher will also continue to serve as part of our professional coaching staff and will work with Roman to help deliver top-notch programming to all of our swimmers.  Promoting Christopher to this new role will allow the Legends to leverage his considerable skills and experience as he enters his fifth season with the Club.

I speak for all members of the Board when I say that we are truly excited with the team we have in place for 2020-2021.  Whether your athlete is just starting their swimming journey, training for the Canadian Olympic Trials, or at any point in between, the Legends Staff will be there to help them achieve their goals.  As we look beyond 2020, we see great things on the horizon for our Club.  We could not be in better hands!
