Hi PVAC Swimmers & Families -
On July 6th, two area municipal/city pools opened up. The Torrance Plunge & El Segundo/Wiseburn Aquatics Center to lap swimming (by reservation) and to the Swim Torrance and Beach Cities Swim Clubs. These swim clubs have agreements with both cities - as these are their normal practice pools. The municipal/city pools are part of their cities and are managed by city employees. They have a staff who oversee the pool deck/area and who are dedicated to the daily cleaning and sanitizing of their facility multiple times throughout the day - as they have multiple users.
Why can't the local swim clubs get back into the high school pools?
The PVPUSD is focused on getting our students back into classes in the fall. The California Interscholastic Foundation (CIF) has set July 20th as their date to offer additional information regarding fall sports and beyond. The district continues to receive daily/weekly reports and recommendations from the Dept of Public Health, LA County Office of Education, LA County and City and CIF. Our district, PVPUSD has not made a decision regarding the re-opening of gyms, pools and fields to outside groups at this time.
The pools that we use are district-owned, maintained and managed by PVPUSD school district employees. There is no dedicated staff (yet) to oversee the pool & deck cleaning & sanitizing. And high school sport teams (waterpolo & swim) have priority over pool use during the fall, winter & spring - as well as the underwater robotics team who requires pool use during the spring. High school sports teams are waiting for the CIF announcement and if/when they can start/resume practices. Everyone is waiting.
Just so you are up-to-date: PVAC submitted a re-opening plan/proposal to the district in June. Our pool use reservation was submitted for June, July and August. Our coaches remain committed to returning to the swim team as soon as we receive approval to use the facility from the district. PVAC's re-opening policies and procedures will be sent to you prior to our return to swim practice (Example: swimmers will need to bring their OWN kickboard, fins, water bottle & pull buoy).
We hope that you are able to continue to exercise outdoors - jogging, biking, roller blading, hiking, walking - maybe even some ocean swims?
Stay safe and healthy - we miss all of you and hope to see you soon!
Coach Mike, Ly-An, Eric, Shannon, Emma and Layne
