Welcome back letter from Coach Carmen & Coaching staff

Dear WGB families, we are thrilled to announce our plan to move forward with the club and get going with our 2020-2021 season. This email is intended to provide as much information as possible to make sure all of our members are aware of the changes we need to follow to ensure the health and safety of our swimmers and at the same time being able to enjoy the sport this season. Coaches have been missing their athletes and we cannot wait to start the year!

Bellow you will find everything you need to know about 2020-2021 start up:

Coaches:

For this year we will have the following coaches running programs:

Coach Shereen: Brown Bears and Cubs

Coach Kayla: Black bears and polar bears

Coach Bronwyn: Polar Bears, Black Bears

Coach Corey: Helping with Kodiaks and Silvertips

Coach Carmen: Cubs, Polar Bears, Kodiaks and Silvertips

Coach Saffron: Teen

Start date:

Our program will begin September 8th!!

Schedule:

You will find the schedule for this year could be slightly different from previous years. With COVID restrictions, the coaches have worked hard to make sure we cover every group’s needs in terms of hours and space.

Please note: there is no deck activation time and there is NO access to changerooms before entering the water, we cannot be on deck more than 3 minutes prior to jump in the water so swimmers must come with bathing suit on. It is important that this is clear to our parents so that swimmers are not dropped off too early. Same rule will apply with pick ups. Swimmers will not be allowed to stay in the changerooms for too long, there will be no water/showers allowed and every swimmer will have a designated spot inside to avoid running into other swimmers’ space,  so check your practice end time and perhaps be ready for pick up within 10 minutes of that time.

Silvertips:

·       Monday and Friday: 6:00-7:45am and 3:30-6:30pm

·       Wednesday 3:30-6:30pm

·       Saturday 7:00-10:00am

·       Dryland days to be confirmed.

Kodiaks:

·       Monday and Friday: 6:00-7:45am and 3:30-5:530pm

·       Wednesday 3:30-5:30pm

·       Saturday 7:00-9:00am

·       Dryland days to be confirmed.

Polar Bears:

·       Monday 5:45pm-7:15pm

·       Wednesday 6:15-7:45am

·       Thursday 5:45-7:15pm

·       Friday 5:30-6:30pm

·       Saturday 7:00-9:00am

Black Bears:

·       Tuesday and Thursdays 5:45-7:15pm

·       Wednesday 6:15-7:45am

Brown Bears:

·       Tuesday and Wednesdays: 5:45-7:15pm

Cubs:

·       Beginner: Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-4:30pm

·       Advanced: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:35-5:35pm

Teen:

·       Monday 6:20-7:15pm

·       Saturday 9:05-10am

Equipment:

There will not be “sharing equipment” allowed. There will be no access to the equipment room, so each swimmer must bring their equipment bag back and forth for every practice. Little cubs will be assigned a kick board (if they don’t have one already) from the equipment room, and they will need to keep that for the duration of the year.

Other equipment that swimmers must have:

Cubs/Brown Bears and Black Bears: Kick board, snorkel, buoy and fins

Polar bears/Kodiaks and Silvertips: Kick board, fins, paddles, snorkel, buoy and band

Dryland:

Due to the lack of ability to utilize deck space, dryland activation will not be possible, however, some groups will be required to have dryland outside the CGC, so please check emails from your coach, because if this applies to your group, it will be necessary for swimmers to bring appropriate clothing.

For older groups, dryland will be under Coach Ben McPherson two times per week. These dryland sessions will be essential because we will not be able to run our own at the level required. Specialized dryland is absolutely necessary if swimmers want to aspire to a high level of performance. Without dryland, it will not be possible to develop to full potential, and that’s why dryland with Coach Ben will be part of the program for 2020-2021 year.

Move ups/group assignments:

Due to COVID restrictions, it has been decided that all swimmers will start the year in the same group they were last year. We will wait few weeks after the season starts to determine if there is enough space to allow move ups. Please bear with us during this time and process as we are all learning new ways to run programs. The most important thing will be to have everyone back, and once things are sorted out, we will proceed to make changes (if conditions allow) and advise people with enough time in advance to make sure a new group is possible for families.

Screening of athletes:

Our return to sport plan involves a daily screening of our athletes and coaches, including checking temperatures and making sure they sanitized their hands at the entrance of the facility. Please be aware that if swimmers are not feeling well, we will have to return them home. We will be doing daily routine questions to make sure we are following the requirements to run our program and to ensure the safety of everyone else. If your swimmer is not feeling well, it is better to keep him/her at home.

Competitions:

The sad part of this year is that from September to December there will be no official competitions. WGB coaching staff will be working hard to schedule some alternative events that can allow us to evaluate our athletes and add some fun to the training. We are still unsure if there will be some sanctioned meets come January, but as soon as we know we will communicate to everyone so that we can plan and include the meets to our schedule!

The first 2-3 weeks will be a learning process to introduce everyone back in and to work with CGC rules to make sure we are all compliant. WE ask for your patience and support by dropping your swimmer off and picking up on time, by avoiding walking on the deck and if your swimmer is not feeling well by keeping him/her home. We will work hard to learn this temporary new normal, and we surely hope we do it fast.
