Stingrays support 50M pool in Aurora

The Town of Aurora is currently considering a proposal to expand the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex to add a 50M pool or two 25M pools. You can reivew the feasibility study and provide comments here.

There is more information available at this facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/auroraaquatics

And the group championing this effort has a website here with a lot more information.

We would encourage members to get involved to encourage consideration of this proposal. A 50M pool in the north end of York Region would be a huge win for our swimmers, allowing us to host long course meets locally and to train in this new facility.

The club sent a letter in support of this proposal.

CLUB LETTER

To:  Town of Aurora
Re:  Aurora Aquatic Centre Feasibility

On behalf of the Newmarket Stingrays Swim Club, we would like to express our strong support of the proposal to include a 50M swimming pool in the new Aquatic Centre being built in the Town of Aurora. Having a 50M pool in Aurora will provide our local swimmers and teams a unique learning and training facility and give them a distinct competitive advantage. It would also become a highly desirable swimming destination for others in York Region. Currently, the Region is only serviced by one 50M pool at the Pan Am Centre in Markham with many teams and programs from inside and outside the Region competing for time. There is truly a need for another 50M pool and it would be perfectly situated in Aurora to service the northern part of the region and beyond.

In addition to pledging our full support for this 50M pool proposal, the Newmarket Stingrays are prepared to make a strong initial commitment to this new facility.

Starting immediately, we would like to:

  • Rent 30 or more hours of pool space on a weekly basis to run practices as part of our athlete development program that includes our beginners through to our high performance athletes;
  • Host 3 to 5 swim competitions each year (we currently host 3 to 4 per year) and, when viable, participate in competitions hosted by other clubs in order to generate revenue for the facility;
  • Provide a volunteer base with “event management” experience that would make hosting any size event immediately viable;
  • Advocate for and endorse the sanctioning and hosting of Club, Regional, Provincial, and National level competitions at the facility.

The Newmarket Stingrays are a non-profit club with a long history and connection to Aurora/Newmarket. A majority of our swimmers call this area home and are active in giving back to this community. As a Club, we would be honoured to have a facility like this to train our athletes and will work hard as proud partner with the Town of Aurora to make it successful and a landmark swimming destination for the Region.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or if you would like to discuss further our position and commitment to this exciting new facility.

Sincerely
