2020/21 SEASON UPDATE

Coaches!

First off, I hope everyone is healthy and doing well as we come up on the Holidays. I know we are all tired of ‘Living in these unprecedented times’ but hopefully each and every one of us has something to look forward to in the coming weeks that will make our days a little brighter.

Let’s get down to business. THIS IS A LONG ONE, PLEASE READ IT ALL!!!!

The SCSL board has been talking through the fall and trying to decide our best steps going forward. We know that COVID numbers in the state are going  up as we enter the winter and flu season, so we wanted to make sure we were being cautious with our plans. On the other hand, our job is to provide high school swimmers in Shelby County the opportunity to grow and thrive in their sport, period. Taking into consideration the state level guidance that we have been given, we have a Spring Swim Season Schedule for 2021 to propose.

TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN WE NEED SOME THINGS FROM YOU- THE COACHES (these are the same questions as earlier this season, but we need to know if/what anything has changed)

  •

We need to know if your  HIGH   SCHOOL  team is planning on participating this season. A  yes or no reply to this email with your team name  included will suffice.

  •

If you plan on participating ( that’s a YES response ) we need to know three different numbers, and yes, estimations are fine (please round up)  FIRST : How many swimmers do you expect to have this year?  SECOND : Can you please divide this by lower class (Freshman and Sophomore) and upper class (Juniors and Seniors)  THIRD:  Out of that total for your team how many do you anticipate would make a state cut -OR-  be ranked top 25 or so in this county.

  •

If you plan on participating we would also like to know if you have access to  practice time and space . If you have requested pool space and have yet to get a response, especially from a YMCA don’t stress, let me know where you have asked. If you typically have pool space but are pooless this year, please let me know where you NORMALLY go.

  •

As a reminder, this is what the TISCA has decided for the state meet:

  •

Option 1: regular state meet entries with no fans

  •

Option 2: state meet with only top 20 swimmers for each race

  •

Option 3: remote meets in each region and combine results for finals

  •

Scheduled for the weekend of April 23rd/24th in Knoxville.

**************     ***************    ****************

  •

EVERYONE NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND-   There is a  MASSIVE  shortage of pool space this season with COVID health restrictions most pools can only allow about 10-15 kids in the water at one time, even with vigorous and consistent health screens.  Not to mention the University pool being closed.

  •

Before I go any further laying out season plans I want to make it clear- the board is here to help facilitate a  fair and productive  season for all. This means there is a chance you will be asked to share pool space and time  (for example, MHEA typically practices 5 days a week for 1 or more hours, we have spoken with MHEA’s Coach and requested they be willing to share that time and space so we may open up that pool to more swimmers across the course of the week)

  •

We will not forcibly make you give up time or space (hey, we  can’t !) but as many of our teams are pooless I want everyone to be prepared to crunch.

  •

This might include halving the number of practices you offer per week, splitting your team into two groups so you don't overwhelm pool space, or capping the number of swimmers you are able to have this year.

  •

This season is crucial to all of us to keep our teams alive, but also to give our upperclassmen, especially graduating seniors, a chance for a season as close to normal as we can offer. For those looking to swim in college, or wanting to finish out high school as an athlete for all 4 years, we want to offer everyone a chance.

NOTES :
-We have planned for a 9-Week season that ends before Spring Break for ease of practice scheduling and to avoid swimmers travelling for break, and then returning to group workouts or meets.
-Each swimmer will be able to swim in 2 meets total.
- The Tunica meets will be invitational only via qualifying time. The results from both meets will be combined so swimmers best times will be awarded for the season.
-Qualifying times for those meets can be from any previous meet, HS or USA; NT entries will not be accepted.
-For all meets, championship rules will be used for relays: 2 swimmers required to have cuts for relays, 2 additional swimmers may be used for RELAY ONLY.
-Every school can only submit an A relay; if you have 4 swimmers then you make one relay not two.
-Fees for the league have yet to be decided, but will be announced soon (By December 15th) . If you plan on swimming and have state swimmers you will need to register with TISCA and pay the $15. TeamUnify fees are also being discussed for this season.
-All fees will be due by February 5th to participate. If you need extra time to request checks let us know and we will keep a space open for your team.

IF YOU DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE OR PROVIDE TEAM INFORMATION TO KELSEY MCDONALD ([email protected]) by TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1ST,  YOU WILL NOT BE PARTICIPATING THIS SEASON.
Team numbers are crucial for us to confirm meet dates and times.

***
Look for an invite next week to a virtual coaches meeting to be scheduled for the first full week of December. We will vote and finalize all plans at that time.
