Ishimaru steps up at sectional

The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op boys swimming team made its presence known at the St. Charles North Sectional on Saturday, finishing fourth with 165 points.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Michael Gordon, Kei Ishimaru, Josh Page and Sam Seneczko came in second place and qualified for next weekend's state meet with a time of 1:37.85.

In the 200 individual medley, Michael Gordon came in second place and qualified for state with a 1:56.73. Ishimaru took third place in this event with 1:57.00 and also qualified for state.

"As a team, we did excellent," Ishimaru said. "Our mind was in the game. We performed and got two relays in and did the best we could."

Ishimaru won the 100 yard butterfly with a 52.08-second performance.

"We had a couple strong members of our team move on last year as seniors so I feel like I'm putting on bigger boots and stepping up to the position," Ishimaru said. "I didn't really taper too much for sectionals. I was looking more toward state. I had a harder workout this week than any other week. I'm looking forward to going to state."

In the 200 freestyle relay, the DeKalb team of Gordon, Ishimaru, Page and Seneczko took second place and qualified for state with 1:27.38.

Michael Gordon took the championship title in the 100 breast stoke with a time of 59.43 seconds.

Kaneland's Grant Alef qualified for state in two events, winning the 100 backstroke in 51.73 seconds and finishing second in the 500 freestyle.

St. Charles North came in first place at their home sectional with 292 points. St. Charles East fought hard to come in second place with 251 points. Lake Park finished third with 196 points. Wheaton St. Francis came in fifth with 81 points. Sixth went to Bartlett with 69 points. West Chicago was seventh with 67 points. Geneva took eighth with 47 points. South Elgin finished ninth with 45 points. Kaneland took 10th with 34 points. Hampshire and Glenbard North tied for 11th with 18 points.
