Weekly Update

Greetings Aquacowboy team members !  I hope everyone’s having a great week.  We’ve had some inspiring swims in practice this week and some awesome All-Star meet results.  The enthusiasm through the winter months on this team has been terrific, as is reflected in our polar bear attendance.

Here’s a quote for the week:

“If you can give your son or daughter only one gift, let it be enthusiasm.”

-Bruce Barton

It’s so great to see all of the kids on our team who have enthusiasm, this is a reflection of our enthusiastic parent group.  Thank you parents!

Here is an important announcement from LAC treasurer Tina Rocha:

“A few LAC members received an email notice on March 3 to sign & return the 2010-11 LAC Membership Agreement Packet.  If you’ve received this email, please sign and return the packet to Emily Byrom, immediately!  This is a very important document that must be kept on file each year. “

“Don’t forget… 1st installment of Fundraising Obligation fee is now due.  Invoices were emailed out on Feb. 21.  Thank you Tom Hayes for your hard work on invoice billing and on answering LAC members’ fundraising- obligation questions.”

Here are some upcoming events:

Montclair Penthathalon:   We’re excited to see who will get best times and who will bring home Montclair Pentathlon T-Shirts.  We have 38 swimmers signed up!  It is sure to be a great team experience.

JO’s:  This is a meet for swimmers with JO qualifying standards.  With JO’s  in nearby San Ramon, we’re expecting a great meet with lots of best times.  Senior swimmers may enter 2 events or more per day and pick which finals to swim.  Junior Swimmers are expected to compete in all eligible events.  There are no relays at the Spring JO’s.

Far Westerns :  This is one of the premier meets for Age Group swimmers on the west coast, with teams from Texas, Mexico, Canada, Oregon, Washington, Northern and Southern California, and the East Coast competing.  We are looking forward to a strong showing with our most ever qualifiers and our most finalists.

10&un champs/ SRVLA/Stanford:   On April 30th all 10&un swimmers with A times will compete in the 10&un championships.  On May 1st, all Junior and Novice level swimmers will compete in the SRVLA CBA+ meet.  On April 30th the Seniors and Qualifying Juniors will head to Stanford to compete in the Stanford Invit.

Way to go LAC!

Here are some highlights from the groups Coach Lisa works with:

PreComp & Novice Black - We have had a chance this week to work on all 4 strokes, our IM turns, and our starts.  Its been great to see Nicholas R. improve his dive. Jessica A. leads the group in our 100 IM challenge.  Breastroke has been improving for Daiki N., Sophia B., and Crewe.  Faith C. has shown improvements in her freestyle rotation and learned all the IM turns.  Jack D.’s kicking has gotten stronger, and been showing in his freestyle.  Next weekend is the Montclair Pentathlon.  The next meet for our group will be the 10&Under Champs, for those swimmers with qualifying A times.

Juniors - We have finished what we call the “Polar Bear” months of December, January, and February.  I’m excited to announce that the Junior Group, as a whole, has had an average attendance of 83% for the pass 3 months!  Congratulations to those who kept their individual attendance above 80%: Nicolette (86%), Sofia (88%), Matthew (88%), Sydney (80%), Victoria (95%), Alex (93%), Cat (90%), Adrianna (85%), Desiree (88%), Brianna (88%), Allie (93%), Taylor (81%), Sarah (88%), Megan (88%), Jenna (91%), and Tori with our highest of 98%! Its great to see such a high level of commitment from the Junior group.  Some highlights from this weeks practice include: Jenna, Alex, and Sarah’s great effort on 5x100’s on the 1:15, Sydney’s focus on her freestyle flipturns, Nicolette’s 7+ second improvement on her kicking average, and Sofia’s improvement on her backstroke technique.  Upcoming meets: Montclair Pentathlon (NEXT weekend), Junior Olympics (March 18-20), and Far Westerns (March 31-April 2).

Here are some highlights from the groups I work with

Novice Gold:  It’s been great to see the dedication from the Novice Gold group throughout the winter.  Never have we had such a large group of Novice swimmers with such high attendance in the winter months.  Polar Bear award winners for this group will be announced in the next update.  Highlights from the past week include Collin, Paige, Taber, Brandon, and Megan W. all averaging under 1:47 for a 5x100 kick set, Celine leading the group in underwater kicking and butterfly, and Jared Hill putting in some great distance per stroke freestyle sets.  Megan H. had a great first All-star meet this weekend, and Julia has been putting in good effort in practice.  We are excited for the Montclair Pentathlon to see who drops their times and shows the excellence they practice every day in the pool.

Senior Group:  Katie and Trent represented their group well at the Zone 2 All-Star meet showing great mental toughness winning events and having great times on a rainy day.  Nina and Andrew continue to be leaders in the group in attendance, with attendance averages in the 90% over the course of the winter based on 10 practices per week.  On Saturday Nina swam her first 49 second 100 free with fins on, and Shahini hit a 1:03 in breast with fins.  Haley Hamza held 6 100’s on the 1:10 at 1:06 or better, then swam 3 more at 1:05 or better.  Evan Carlo had some great backstroke sets in practice last week, including putting a 50 back under 24 seconds for the first time.  Brendan Schierloh has now swum approximately 10x 50’s of breast under 30 seconds.  Natalie Wong continues to be consistent and tough in practice, putting several 75’s back under 45 seconds with fins, including one at 40 seconds.  She also made a tough set of 200 freestyles finishing on the 2:15 interval.  We are excited to see what’s in store for these Senior swimmers as we approach JO’s, Far Westerns, and the High School Championship season.

Thank you all LAC team members for the great amount of energy and enthusiasm you put into helping our team be the best we can be.  Have a great week,

Coach Alex
