On Thursday, day 3 of the 2008 YMCA National Championships, the Kishwaukee YMCA / DeKalb County Swim Team (DCST) continued to roll up the points. DCST had 11 lifetime best performances in the preliminary session out of 16 swims bringing the three day meet total to 32 of 45 swims. DCST had three swims in finals which were all faster than their times in the preliminary session. DCST has now swum faster in all 8 of their swims in the final session. DCST also set 4 new team records to bring the three day total to 17.
The relays were the main story of the day as both of DCST’s 800 meter Freestyle Relays placed in the top 16. The women’s team of Emily Launer, Grace Waller, Kate Taylor and Emily Waller place 5th tying the mark of DCST’s highest placing relay ever. Emily Launer’s 200 meter Freestyle relay spilt was a new DCST team record. On the men’s side, Grant Alef, Zach Jones, Michael Gordon and David Gordon placed 16th. All eight swimmers earned National All-American honors. This was the first time Michael Gordon and Zach Jones have been named a National All-American.
Grace Waller qualified for finals in the 400 meter Individual Medley in 16th place. In finals, she lowered her preliminary time by over 5 seconds and finished 13th. She was also named a National All-American. Including her relay swim on Thursday, Grace has now been named a National All-American four times at this meet and for a total of 12 times in her career. Her career mark now ranks her 3rd on DCST’s All-time National All-American list, and 1st for women. With her performance at this meet, she moved ahead of Kirsten Koepcke to be DCST’s most decorated female swimmer. Matt Chambers ranks 1st on DCST’s All-Time list with 18 National All-American honors. Waller will be a sophomore this fall at DeKalb High School; and therefore, potential has 6 more National Championships (3 winter and 3 summer) in career with DCST.
For the fifth time this meet, Emily Launer was named a National All-American with her 14th place performance in the Women’s 200 meter Backstroke. Launer qualified for finals in 15th place during the preliminary session. Tara Gidaszewski and Launer both broke DCST’s previous team record in this event. Grant Alef also set a new team record in the Men’s 200 meter Backstroke. Even though his time in finals was 2.25 seconds faster in finals than prelims, he finished 10th both in both sessions. Alef has now been named a National All-American four times at this meet.
