US Open Results

Neptune seniors Maya DiRado, Molly Hannis, Amanda Sims, and Penelope Yamauchi traveled along with Coach Dan to the 2006 US Open held at the campus of Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana.

Besides having fun bumping elbows with "celebrity swimmers" (see photos) and braving the sub 20 degree weather, this group enjoyed some strong swims as well. Amanda placed 7th in the Championship Final of the 100 Fly and set a personal best in the 100 Back; Maya had a personal best 100 Back as leadoff in the 400 Med Relay; Penelope had a personal best in the 100m Free as leadoff in the 400 Free Relay; and Molly swam strong legs in relays (splitting a personal best 1:02.5 in the free relay) and helped the Neptunes to 11th place finishes in both relay events.

Meet Report from Coach Dan:

  • We saw a little of everything - RAIN - SNOW - FREEZING SUNSHINE - HEAT - CHLORINE BURNING OUR EYES AND CHEST. It is an amazing experience socializing and interacting with Olympians on a friendly level. The girls were introduced to Ryan Lochte (photo), they met and talked with Cullen Jones, Michael Phelps was within striking distance at all times, Tara Kirk knows who we are and Ariana Kukors is the ALL-AMERICAN girl next door. We saw Klete Keller false start on a relay, we saw Michael Phelps false start in the 200 back, we saw Tara Kirk get disqualified for one of two things -- either her elbows coming over the surface of the water on her breaststroke or she did her dolphin kick in her pull down before she started moving her arms, WOW what controversy. Marit taped everything from the girls swimming to coach Dan cheering to Dennis Sturdevant ringing the bell as an official.
  • I feel the girls swam their hearts out and they did a great job of controlling their nerves. We were prepared mentally and physically to perform at the highest level and I feel we accomplished that goal. It is very hard to determine how these long course times rate at this time of the year because we don't often race long course in November. I am really excited with the training ideas I picked up from other coaches and I am more motivated than ever to get back to work and continue the great progress we have already made.
  • Next up on the Traveling Neptune Show is Sectionals in Long Beach
