Opening night of Senior States brings strong relays

Thursday night signaled the beginning of the 2011 Senior State Championship. The event is an open invitation style, allowing college teams and outside state teams to attend.

For Desert Thunder Aquatics, the opening swims were the women's and men's  200 freestyle relays.

The women's relay was comprised of Lexie Lezcano, Cory Basselen, Lindsay Hartman and Elena Burr. Lexie led off with a new personal best time of 28.83. Cory(32.8) and Lindsay(29.93) brought in personal best splits to hold ground in the middle, while Elena Burr scorched home to overtake two relay teams in a perosnal best split of 28.03. The team dropped 3 seconds in their overall time to move from a seeded 16th place to 14th place!

The men's relay was led off by young 14 year old Alec Lezcano in a time of 25.93. Teammates Brandon Turley (27.11) and Tyler Beardsley(28.33) kept the relay in the hunt, and then Abhishek Rajadas held off the charging field to split 24.96 for a perosnal best split. The men finished 2nd in the heat, moved from 20th place to 16th to add points, and qualified the relay for the Sectional Championships in a time of 1:46.29!

Competition continues Friday morning for the first individual swims for Desert Thunder. The Competition is stiff, with the top 24 in each event often right around the sectional time standard. Olympian Darren Townsend highlights the field.
