David Graham Article

The Buenaventura Swim Club recently hosted its 42ndannual David Graham Memorial Swim Meet.  With over 700 athletes converging on the Ventura Aquatics Center, Buena Swimmers shined even in the shadows of an overcast and gloomy sky.  While the performance of the swimmers was inspiring, it is helpful to put this long standing meet into perspective.

The Buenaventura Swim Club has been serving Ventura County since 1962, producing outstanding swimmers and upstanding young adults through a disciplined approach to athletics.  The David Graham Memorial Swim Meet has been hosting athletes at its venue since 1969!  This is a great tradition, but it is compulsory that we remember why the meet is a “Memorial Meet”.  The competition celebrates the fitness, form, and good condition of our local youth, but it is a memorial to 3 past members of Buenaventura Swim Club who tragically lost their fitness, form, and good condition when they passed on entirely too young.  Shaun Treskes, Stella Brittingham, and David Graham are the namesakes of three Memorial Awards given to the winners of Women’s 500 Freestyle, Women’s 100 Breaststroke, and Men’s 500 Freestyle, respectively.

Shaun, Stella, and David were all valuable members of the Buenaventura Swim Club.  Each was important to their friends and each was a good swimmer.  Shaun passed away in 1981 at the age of 22.  Stella lost her life in 1971 in an automobile accident on her way to her first teaching job while she was in her early twenties.  David Graham served his country as a United States Marine and lost his life in 1969 at the young age of 20.  David was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal – 3 Stars, and the Navy Commendation Medal.  Three heroes taken too soon, but whose spirit remains strong through the Tradition of Buenaventura Swim Club and its David Graham Memorial Swim Meet.

Following are some current swimmers who help celebrate the memory by participating in the David Graham Memorial Swim Meet and who each received at least one first place honor at our recent meet:  Giovanna Postma, Torie Ball, Elizabeth Senesac, Tea Laughlin, Caitlin Espitia, Annika Arroyo, Lauren Kearney, Alicia Harrison, Lindsay Clark, Ashley LeCroy, Solana Laughlin, Samantha Wright, Chesna Biolley, Mariya Petraitus, Aniket Rahane, Joshua Sponseller, Jason Talmage, Ali Hemmatyar, Joshua Barretto, Lance Fausset, Spencer Nichols, Stewart Harrison, and Kallen Meyer.  It is almost important to note that Buena’s own Chesna Biolley won both the Stella Brittingham and Shaun Treskes awards, while Buena’s Nick Vargas narrowly missed winning the David Graham Award to Armen Darbinyan of CCAT!
