December 4, 2011
FAST Elite Team swimmers competed in USA Swimming's 2011 Winter National Championships last weekend. The event was held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Team results are recapped below. Complete results and race videos can be viewed here.
FAST had several outstanding performances that contributed to a Third Place team finish. Tyler Clary and Michael Klueh led the way with multiple trips to the podium. Clary was the 2011 Winter National Champion in both the 400 IM and the 200 Backstroke and raced to a close second in the 200 Butterfly. Klueh earned silver medals in the 400 Freestyle and 1500 Freestyle and was the top American finisher in both events. In an exciting four-man race for second in the 400 IM, Robert Margalis came out on top to claim the silver medal in that event and Katie Hoff earned a bronze medal in a very competitive Women's 400 IM.
Other Top-10 finishes for FAST came from Clary (4th, Men's 200 IM), Hoff (4th, Women's 200 IM), Klueh (7th, Men's 200 Free), Margalis (8th, Men's 200 IM), Matt McLean (7th, Men's 400 Freestyle) and Ed Moses (8th, 200 Breast). McLean, Moses, Whitney Burnett, Lauren Morford and Mike Smit all also finished in the Top-20 of several events: McLean (12th, 200 Free), Burnett (12th, 200 IM; 18th 100 Butterfly), Morford (13th, 800 Freestyle) and Smit (16th, 200 Free; 19th, 400 Free).
