On Monday, November 21st, President Wallace Loh, announced his
decision to cut 8 sports teams at the University of Maryland,
including the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Programs.
Parents and supporters have gotten together to start the Save Maryland Swimming and Diving Campaign. The objective is to raise $11.56 million by June to save the programs by funding them for the next 8 years and ultimately creating an endowment in perpetuity. The Maryland Swimming and Diving history spans 57 years and boasts a combined 8 ACC Championships, 2 Olympic medalists, 10 current Olympic Trial qualifiers and 2 Olympic Trial qualifier alum. Beyond the pool, the teams are among the highest GPA and graduation rates at Maryland.
Currently, five members of the Maryland teams have connections to New England; freshman, Matt Tynan (PSC); sophomore, Jenni Roberts (SSA), junior, Jeff Winters (RAMS), Assistant Coach Matt Emmert ( former RAMS and URI) and former Harvard Asst. Coach and current Maryland Head Coach Sean Schimmel. Maryland's programs are not the first and will not be the last on the chopping block.
Join our fight to save our nationally ranked teams and let them know college swimming must go on!
