Mount Snow Has ERS Athletes
West Dover, Vermont - 1/17/2012
This week was a good week for the Mount Snow Training Center (MSTC). For the first time since 2007, Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) announced that (3) alpine athletes from Mount Snow were qualified for the upcoming USSA J3 ERS Race Event being held this year (1/21 - 1/22) at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY. USSA ERS which stands for United States Ski and Snowboard Association Eastern Regional Series is an event that invites the top 110 J3 alpine racers (55 male / 55 female ages 13 to 14) east of the Mississippi for competition in (SL) slalom and (GS) giant slalom. Each eastern regional state or racing association is tasked with selecting a small percentage of its racers to represent them at the ERS. It is a preview for coaches and USSA officials to evaluate the strength of the eastern region's racers and for the racers themselves an early season opportunity to test their skills against the best competition around. Ultimately many of the racers who participate this weekend will go on to qualify for the Jr. Olympics now called the J3 Jr Championships, the J3 Can-Ams, and for the very select few the National J3 ID Project at the home of the US Ski Team in Park City, Utah.
Sanderson Kemp, age 14, leads the Mount Snow J3 women's team this year so far posting strong top 5 finishes in both SL and GS. A native of East Dover, VT. Sanderson is attending Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester, VT and is a freshman standout on their VPA (Vermont Principals Association High School) varsity alpine team. She qualified for the VT State Championships in 2010 and 2011. This weekend's ERS will be Sanderson's debut into USSA Regional Level Events.
Jessie Kuzmicki, age 14 from Pownal VT, is a freshman at Mt. Anthony Union High School in nearby Bennington. She has been a member of the MSTC Alpine Race Team since 2008 and also is racing as an independent in the VPA High School league this year. In 2010 as a J4 (ages 11-12), Kuzmicki was Southern Vermont's Super Combined Champion, qualified for the USSA J4 Jr. Olympics and ultimately went on to the USSA-East National J4 Cam-Ams where she finished in the top 30 combined SL and GS. In 2011 she was selected and attended the USSA J3 Elite Fundamentals Training Camp.
Sam Cusick, age 14, is the only male team member from Mount Snow to qualify for ERS. He lives in Fairfield, CT and attends Tomlinson Public Middle School as an 8th grader. Sam has qualified for the Vermont State Championships the last 3 straight years and finished in the top 25 last year in the J3 States (SL). Like his teammate Sanderson, this will be Sam's 1st appearance in a USSA Regional venue.
Proudly, all 3 Mount Snow athletes are also academic Honor Roll students.
