On Monday, DCST swimmer Grace Waller, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in her knee. Grace is a member of our National Team Practice group, and she is 16 years old. On Friday, after a day of tests and body scans, she received the best possible news under the circumstances. The doctors at Rush Hospital in Chicago were excited to tell Grace the cancer was localized to the knee, and it has not spread into any other part of her body. Furthermore, they were also encouraged by the shape and size of the tumor.
Grace will begin chemotherapy within the next week or two. She will be on a 12 week chemotherapy program. During and after treatments, Grace will be spending 3 – 5 days in the hospital with 1 – 2 weeks off between treatments. After these treatments, Grace will have surgery to remove the tumor. DCST plans to keep everyone up-to-date as much as possible during Grace’s treatment and recovery process.
