We had twenty-nine athletes represent Loggerhead Aquatics last weekend in Sarasota, FL for the spring short course yards Florida Age Group Championship meet, formerly known as Florida Junior Olympics. The combined team score for Loggerhead Aquatics placed us at 16th this year, an improvement from last year’s short course yard rank of 35th.
Highlights from this year’s meet included 10 year old Summer Stanfield who medaled in all six of her individual events, winning gold in the 50 yard butterfly, placing second in both the 100 yard free and 100 yard butterfly, and taking third in the 50 yard back, 100 yard individual medley, and 50 yard freestyle. Also on the girls side Eleanor Pollitt made finals in five of her six individual events and with her highest place ranking 4th in the 11-12 girls 50 yard freestyle. Our highest finish from the girls relays were the 11-12 girls in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Lead off by Eleanor Pollitt, Anna Gapinski, Abbey Ellis, and Megan Arnold, the relay placed 11th.
On the boys side, Ethan Chestang earned a bronze medal in the 100 yard backstroke for the 13-14 boys division and also made finals in the 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard backstroke. Carter Strickland, 12, also took a bronze medal in the 50 yard freestyle and made finals in all six of his individual events. On the 10&Under boys side, both the 200 yard free and 200 yard medley relays placed 7th overall. The 200 free relay was composed of Luke Williams, Nick Vansteenberghe, Robbie Rait, and Michael Morton. The 200 medley relay; Luke Williams, Ethan Howell, Robbie Rait, and Michael Morton.
Chestang, Pollitt, Stanfield, and Strickland will all be representing Loggerhead Aquatics and Florida Swimming at the Florida All-Star meet on the weekend of March 24-25, 2012.
Congratulations to all swimmers that participated in Sarasota this past weekend! For our rookie swimmers, their first time experience at FLAGs was a great opportunity to see fast competition and for some also represented their first travel meet. For some of our older athletes this was their first experience with prelims/finals. All-in-all this FLAGs represented a great learning experience for our swimmers and their parents to the level of competition our swimmers are capable of succeeding in.
Also, a huge thank you from the coaches to our swimmer parents; we thank you for the sacrifices you make on a daily basis to help your swimmer, the team, and our coaches succeed. Thank you for your continued support of Loggerhead Aquatics!
Looking ahead to FLAGs long course meters we expect to even have a better showing! The meet will be held on July 19-22, 2012 in Gainesville, FL. Swimmers that have short course yards qualifying times are already qualified for the meet.
