Records fall, strong swims at the 2012 Arizona Invitational

Over a beautiful Memorial Day weekend, twenty to twenty five swimmers from Desert Thunder Aquatics attended the 2012 Arizona Invitational. The event was hosted at two different locations, with the 12 and under swimmers competing in Mesa during prelims, and the 13 and over competing at the Arizona State University facility in Tempe. For finals each day, all age groups competed at the University.

The three-day event provided great swimming and competition, as several Olympic trial qualifiers, mixed in with three to four previous Olympic medalists and contenders added to the racing excitement.

Desert Thunder swimmers posted a strong average of best times, with several returning to finals in the evenings.

Leading the way was Alec Lezcano, who returned to finals each day. Alec posted two new team records for the 15-16 boys age group, going 24.95 in the 50 meter freestyle and a 54.60 in the 100 meter free. Alec’s time in his 100 free was also a new Northwest Sectional time qualification.

Cory Basselen also made finals on two evenings, posting a new Northwest Sectional time qualification in her 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:53.41.

Also returning to finals for Desert Thunder were Ellinore Duncan in the 13-14 girls 100 breast, 200 breast, 50 Free and 200IM. Julia Boese in the women’s 100 butterfly and 200 free, Levi Siwek in the 13-14 boys 100 and 200 backstrokes, Edda Anderson in the girls 11-12 100 backstroke, Sierra Bigelow in the 13-14 girls 100 butterfly, and Elena Burr in the women’s 200IM.
