OA at the Olympic Trials

Orinda Aquatics had several swimmers and alumns competing in Omaha at the 2012 Olympic Swimming Trials. They kicked off on Day One with the Men's 400 Individual Medley. Seeded in heat 2 of 12, Steven Stumph dropped almost two seconds from his seed time, finishing in 4:28.33 for 48th place. Steven also swam the 100 breast later that afternoon (1:04.46). Way to go Steven! Orinda Aquatic Alum, Kim Vandenberg competed at the Olympic Trials for her third time. On Monday, she finished 14th overall in the 100 fly seminfinals (59.24). Also swimming in Day One preliminaries was Andrea Ward who competed for the Gaucho Swim Club in the 100 butterfly (1:02.36).

On Day Three, Kim swam the 200 free (2:00.56) for an 18th place finish.

Day Four started with the Men's 100 M Freestyle with Sven Campbell (52.29) and alum Chris Peterson (51.17). Immediately following was OA Alum and past Olympian Kim Vandenberg who finished 1st in the 200 M Butterfly Preliminaries (2:08.78)!  The morning wrapped up with the Men's 200 breaststroke where both Chris Leon (2:22.08) and Steven Stumph competed. Steven swam a lifetime best time of 2:16.58 finishing 34th overall at Olympic Trials!  In Day Four's evening semifinals in the Women's 200 M butterfly, Kim Vanderberg earned a spot in finals where she will try to earn her spot on the Olympic Team. Goooo Kim!

Day Five began for OA when Sven Campbell swam for his second time at Olympic Trials, touching the wall in 2:07.73 in the 200 M Backstroke. The action continued with Penelope Yamauchi (ASU) ,who has been training with Orinda Aquatics this summer, competing in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.84). The final event of the preliminaries was the 200 IM where Steven Stumph got his third personal best time, finishing in 2:05.17 for a 48th place finish overall. At Friday night's Final Competition in Omaha, Nebraska, OA Alum Kim Vandenberg narrowly missed qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in the 200 meter butterfly finishing in third place with a time of 2:08.99.

The last day for OA competition was Day Six which began with the fast action in the 50 M freestyle. Sven Campbell (23.83) and OA alum Chris Peterson (23.25) both competed in the event.
