Greenwood Masters Takes 2nd Place at 2012 NE Short Course Championships

The Greenwood Memorial Masters Swim Team competed over the weekend at the 2012 New England LMSC Short Course Yards Championships at Harvard University.  Recognized as the largest masters local swim meet in the US, this annual event attracted 81 teams from throughout the northeast and was attended by 887 competitors.  Greenwood's second place finish in the medium size team division (maximum of 25 team members) was their best ever scoring 2,072 overall points with 24 participants.  Their overall eighth place finish is a real tribute to the growth of the age grouped program over the 6 years of it's existence.

Four individual NE championships were captured by Greenwood swimmers.  Three went to Dick Hutchings who won the 1000 yard freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle in national qualifying times.  His second place in the 100 freestyle, three third places in the 200 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 50 backstroke were also all national qualifying swims, as were his fourth in the 50 freestyle, and sixth in the 100 breaststroke.  His 132 points were a high for the Greenwood men and was good enough for a 20th place out of 494 male competitors.

Greenwood newcomer Chris Van Amburgh was also a NE champion winning his division in the 1000 yard freestyle.  The 23 year old Springfield College swimmer competing in his first master championship meet amassed 82 individual team points with fifths in the 200 yard individual medley, 500 freestyle, and 200 yard breaststroke.  An eighth in the 100 freestyle, ninth in the 200 freestyle, eleventh in the  50 breaststroke, thirteenth in the 100 individual medley, and fifteenth in the 50 freestyle were all worth points.

Robin Sandos, a local and nationally recognized triathlete, set the standard of excellance for the Greenwood performances in thirteen individual events as well as demonstrating her versatility in all four strokes.  She recorded national qualifying times in all 13 events she swam.  Her 166 individual points was a team high and placed her tenth overall among 393 female performers.  Her best finish came in the 200 yard backstroke placing second.  This was followed by thirds in the 1650 yard freestyle and 400 yard individual medley, fourths in the 500 yard freestyle, 200 yard breaststroke, 200 freestyle, 50 yard backstroke,100 freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke, fifths in the 100 yard butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 200 individual medley, and an eighth in the 100 individual medley.
