DESERT THUNDER SENIOR STATE RESULTS

Beginning Thursday July 12th, Desert Thunder Senior State qualifiers entered what was to become the wettest championship meet on record for Arizona Swimming.

Over three and a half days the athletes contended with down pours, lightning delays and wind, while grabbing and an eleventh place overall team finish, which included nine Sectional qualification performances.

Cory Basselen led the individual scoring for the team, adding 37 individual points overall in just five events. Cory placed top 8 in the three breaststroke events, swimming to Sectional qualifying marks in her 100 Breaststroke (1:19.14) and the 200 breaststroke

(2:51.82), both personal best times. Cory also participated on the scoring 200 and 400 medley relays.

16-year-old Julia Boese added to the individual scoring for Desert Thunder, scoring 33 individual points, along with assisting in all four senior women’s scoring relays. Julia’s highlight event occurred when she qualified 8th in the women’s 50 freestyle, also qualifying for the Sectional Championships in Oregon with a time of 28.03.

On the men’s side, Alec Lezcano, while training through the event to prepare for the upcoming Sectional Championships, scored 26 points individually. Along the way Alec re-affirmed two sectional qualifying times, and re-set his own team record in the 15-16 boys 50 fly, pushing the mark to 26.48.

Lexie Lezcano scored two tenth place finishes for her 50 and 100 breaststroke events, and Abhishek Rajadas scored for the team in the men’s 50 backstroke. Additional team swimmers who qualified for the finals included Elena Burr and Justin Dawson.

The most improved swimmer performance went out to Justin Dawson, who went best times eight out of eight swims.

The senior girls relays added 58 points for the team. The senior women’s 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams qualified for the Sectional Championship. The women’s 200 free relay of Lexie Lezcano, Ally Padilla, Elena Burr and Julia Boese finished the highest place overall at 5th, only 1.16 seconds off Desert Thunder senior women’s relay record. The 200 and 400 Medley relay teams of Ally Padilla, Cory Basselen, Julia Boese and Elena Burr finished 10th and 11th respectively.
