Please note that coaches are requiring that each swimmer have their own pair of fins during practice. Swimmers may borrow fins from our large gray bins on the pool deck, or you may purchase them from me during the scheduled times above.
Coach Peter Ward and Coach Mike Cook also require that all swimmers in the Junior Gold, SR Prep and Senior Groups have paddles ($18), and a snorkel ($40). You will also have the option of purchasing a pull buoy ($10), kick board ($10), and an equipment bag ($15) to hold all of your gear. I will have these items at the pool on the days listed above, but you will need to order the snorkel in advance.
I will have team gear on display and for purchase at practice during this week only. Starting next week, if you would like to purchase any additional gear (sweatshirt/fins/mesh bags/backpacks, etc..) you will need to email me ahead of time and I will schedule a day to deliver it to you at the pool.

If you are interested in purchasing these, please send me an email with the exact spelling of the name that you want printed on the caps by Noon on Friday.
MAKO Fall Invitational, October 6-7:
We will be hosting the first meet of the season next month. You will find the meet announcement and the instructions on how to enter this meet on our website. Please note that entries are due no later than Thursday, September 20.
If you need assistance in determining which events your child should enter, please email your child's coach.
If you have questions regarding the actual online entry process, please look at the Q&A section on the website first, and if you need further assistance, please email our Webmaster, Cathy Summers at email@example.com.
We will need a bunch of volunteers to help in the following areas (officials, timers, hospitality helpers, team awards, concessions tables). If your child/children are participating in the meet, please sign up to help out. This season, each family is required to sign up to volunteer for at least 1 session at a meet that your swimmer is participating in.
We will be posting and distributing an update with respect to the Job sign-up system soon.
If you are able to officiate, please contact our Officials Chair, Tony Fitz at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note from MAKO Officials Chair, Tony Fitz:
Welcome to a new season, MAKO parents.
As the MAKO Officials Chair, I’d like to extend to thank each of you who have been officiating at meets in the past and invite participation for those who have not participated previously.
Officials are needed on deck as Stroke & Turn Judges, Chief Judges, Starters and Referees, and at the starting table for operation of the computer and electronic starting system.
A very simplified description of these 3 jobs: the Starter starts the race and ensures all the swimmers get a fair start, the Colorado Timing System operator electronically gets the times from the touch pads then changes the scoreboard to the next race, the Hy-tek operator receives the times from the Colorado computer and prints results and ribbon labels.
Officiating is a great way to connect with your “favorite swimmer(s).” No prior experience is necessary and PVS has a strong program of training and apprenticeship. At meets, you will have the best seats in the house and awesome perks such as free food (one of my favorites) and financial incentives.
Free clinics for all officiating positions are hosted by Potomac Valley Swimming throughout the year. A listing of upcoming clinics is posted at http://pvswim.org/official/officialsclinics.html. Note that pre registration is requested but not required (walk-ins are accepted) and clinics are offered THIS WEEKEND.
We host our first meet of the season on the weekend of October 6. This meet will be an outstanding opportunity to hone existing skills or practice new ones. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Tony Fitz, MAKO Officials Chair
Our team is hosting 4 meets this year at GMU, so we need a bunch of officials. We've been fortunate to have a small group of dedicated officials who have worked our meets year after year, but we really need our new families to step up and help out as well. PVS is hosting several officials clinics this season. The first is being held this Saturday, September 15 at the MLK Swim Center, and the next one will be held on Saturday, September 29th at GMU. We hope many parents will attend one (or more) of these clinics. Potomac Valley Swimming has excellent training and incentive programs for officials. MAKO will pay the membership fees for team parents becoming new USA Swimming officials and returning officials will have their annual fees paid by Potomac Valley Swimming.
Incentive: If you become a registered official, your childs' event fees will be covered by MAKO for each session that you work during a meet. For example, Mr. Anderson is a registered Stroke and Turn official for MAKO, his daughter is entered in 6 events, (3 events per day) at the MAKO Fall Invitational. The swimmer surcharge to enter the meet is $4, and the event entry fee is $5 per event, totaling $34 for this meet. Mr. Anderson has volunteered to officiate for 1 session (Saturday) during the meet and therefore he will NOT have to pay for the events his daughter swims on Saturday, but only the ones she swims on Sunday. His meet fees total $19, instead of $34. If Mr. Anderson volunteers on both days, all of her events would be covered and his meet fee would only be $4. Every MAKO official will also receive a new NIKE jacket and a new collared Polo this season.
Please let Coach Heather know if you have any questions.
