Monument Masters Swim Club Open House and Fall Coached Session

Bennington , VT – The Monument Masters Swim Club will kick off its fall coached session with an Open House on Saturday September 29 th from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at the Bennington Recreation Center . All swimmers ages 18 and older and invited to come meet other masters swimmers, participate in an organized fun workout, and learn about the upcoming coached session.

Certified Masters Swim Coach Michael Leake will lead the fall session which runs for twelve weeks from Saturday October 13 th through Saturday December 29 th.  Structured workouts will emphasize swimming for improving fitness and stroke mechanics.  We will look to train different energy systems in order to obtain a higher level of conditioning, as well as swimming faster in races (either pool or open water events).  While competition is not a requirement, we will train for three specific events throughout the year to allow for monitoring of progress towards individual goals through instruction of all four competitive strokes.  Information about general health, injury prevention, and nutrition will also be shared.

The cost for the 12-week Saturday program is $50 paid in full by October 13, or a $6 drop-in fee for any Saturday. Coach Leake will be on-deck every other week; the remaining swimmer-led workouts will be designed by him to fit into the overall program.  Membership in the national USMS organization is recommended, but not required at this time.  All swimmers are required to pay the Bennington Recreation Center their membership fee for use of that facility.

Mike Leake, a Bennington native and former Marauder swimmer, is a Level 2 certified Masters swim coach through the ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association). For the past two years he has placed first in the 200-yd backstroke at New England Masters Championships and ranks 5th in the nation for the 200 backstroke in the short course meters season.  He was the first non-wetsuit swimmer to finish in the 2012 Peaks to Portland 2.4 mile swim in Maine , and also competed in the 2012 10-mile Kingdom Swim in Newport , VT.
