October Re-cap

Hello all LAC Families, we hope you are all having a great November so far.  It has been awesome to see the progress of our groups this month in attendance and on test sets.  Some swimmers have improved tremendously, making all test set swims where last month they only made one or two.  It is inspiring to see the great effort of these swimmers pay off in practice and at meets.  Perhaps even more exciting is the team bonding and encouragement that takes place during these challenging test sets.  The kids have been responding by lifting each other up and cheering for each other.  In line with our mission of creating leaders in our community through the sport of swimming, LAC swimmers are learning how to lead by example through their efforts and also verbally through their encouragement of others.

While we think it’s important for swimmers, parents, and coaches to have a clear picture of progress with regards to attendance and test sets, the information presented in this newsletter is not meant to shame or discourage anyone.  Hopefully it will provide encouragement and motivation.   If you would like your child’s information to be left out of the newsletter, please contact the LAC coaching staff and we can leave it out.

Thank you LAC BOD and parent groupfor taking the time to discuss the LAC travel policy and other important team topics.  Your support of our team makes a great difference in the overall experience of everyone involved.  You are doing a great job!

We have had some great meets and other team breakthroughs over the past month.  Some of the highlights will be shared in the individual group updates.  Here are some quick highlights:

Team Clinic-  October 26th.  We worked on Freestyle and Backstroke and had participation of about 60 swimmers!

Nov. 3-4 PLS CBA+ :  We had a great meet with several new best times and new A times achieved.  We are excited to see what will happen at our last chance meet in Walnut Creek as several swimmers are on the verge of qualifying for new JO standards.

Here are some upcoming events to be aware of

Can USA Swimming be as exciting at Summer League?  We all know swimming year round makes us better, but how can we capture the team spirit and camaraderie of summer league through the USA Swimming model?  One way is to have team goals we are shooting for, such as placing in the top 16 for our relays at JOs, and placing in the top 24 for our relays at Washington.  USA Swimming has a way of tracking overall team swimming performance for swimmers 11 to 18 in the Virtual Club Championships.  This is a program that scores the top two swimmers for females and males in each event from ages 11 to 18.  Here are our standings over the past 5 years:

Tracks virtual power points scored for male and female 11-18.  Does not track under 11 because this is developmental stage and focus on technique is top priority.

2011-2012  75,870  26th Pacific/ 652nd USA

2010-2011  53,107  44th Pacific/ 931st  USA

2009-2010  44,713  44th Pacific/ 1050th USA

2008-2009  34,430  60th Pacific/ 1225th USA

2007-2008  20,530  66th Pacific/ 1536th USA

As you can see, we have improved every year and have moved up in the USA Swimming and Pacific Swimming Rankings.  There are 2599 clubs in USA Swimming and 112 clubs in Pacific Swimming, so we are in the top 25% in USA swimming and the top 23% of Pacific Swimming.  This includes all teams, no matter how large.  It is our goal to break 90,000 points this year and to move into the top 20 of Pacific Swimming and into the top 500 of USA Swimming.  In order to do this we will need a team effort where people make a commitment to signing up for meets and to doing events they have never done before such as the 1650 free, 1000 free, 500 free, 400 IM, and 200 fly.  In many of these events we have no points for certain age groups.  Imagine how great our total will be if we have more participation in these events.  Help us create a greater team feeling by participating in this with us.  Our coaching staff has agreed upon this goal and we will be having a pizza and water polo party shortly after we reach our goal of 90,000 points in USA Swimming’s Virtual Club Championships

Coach Kevin

Pre-Comp and Novice I

We are having a great time learning to swim in the Pre-Comp and Novice I groups.  Our swimmers are getting stronger and are learning how to swim using proper swimming technique in all four competitive strokes.  This month we were excited to add our newest member to LAC, 4-year-old Ally, who has an amazing amount of enthusiasm that is sure to help her become a great swimmer and person.  Ally’s brother Kevin, is continuing to make improvements and have fun swimming while serving as a great role model for his sister.  Tyler turned 5 this month and his endurance has been growing each practice; he has even been caught leading his lane from time-to-time.  Mia has really been working on become a good kicker and has made huge advancements this past month.  Ellie is coming to more and more practices and her commitment has helped her to become a better breaststroker and swimmer.  Madison is also becoming a better breaststroker and always brings great enthusiasm and dedication to each practice.  All of our swimmers made great advancements from last month on the test set, and many are getting close to being able to pass it.  Great job swimmers!

Novice 1 - It’s so inspiring to see how much improvement can be made in 1 month. These swimmers have worked hard, and it shows.  We are getting consistently better on our ready position push offs, our dives, reading the clock, learning intervals, and turns. These athletes are ready to race, and am excited we will see some race soon! We’ve had 2 swimmers earn their SPEED RACER HOT WHEELS CAR for making ALL the test sets -Congratulations to Lilly and Sophia! Some are very close, I have a feeling next month I’ll be passing out several more.

Junior 1 Group:

The Junior 1 Group is improving by leaps and bounds.  We are working on the fundamentals of the four strokes, kick conditioning, and distance per stroke freestyle.  It is great to see 7 year olds Minh-Nha and Faith taking leadership roles and making the whole test set.  Kylie and Annelyse are transitioning into the Junior 2 group and this makes space for people like Jessica, Jack, Melinda, Wilson, and Danny to step up more and more.  So far our swimmers have been doing an outstanding job at meets, including getting PRT times!  We are looking forward to some awesome swims at Walnut Creek.  Look out Taber daCosta, someone from this group might break the team record for getting JO’s the youngest!  I would like to see more and more people entering meets. As you know the meets close quickly in this area so when a meet opens, please sign up immediately.  Our next meet after JO’s will be the RAM/ SRVLA dual venue meet on December 15-16th.  Please check the pac swim website for postings and sign up as soon as possible.

Junior II

This past month with the Junior II’s has been fantastic.  We have continued to work hard and have had fun doing it.  Our kicking strength and speed has improved tremendously all-around, and particularly, Amanda, Bella, Chenoa, and Connor have each significantly improved their kicking speed.  Good work!  Everyday, our swimmers are getting stronger and are swimming with better technique.

We had our first meet of the season in Hayward at the beginning of the month, and the Junior IIs swam amazingly.  Taber, Nick, Franco, Daiki, Jacqueline, Paige, Kristina, andKatie all had best times in multiple events.  In addition, Nick, Jacqueline, andPaige all qualified for Junior Olympics for the first time in their respective age groups.  Great job everyone who swam!  I would like to encourage all Junior II parents to make it a priority to sign your swimmers up for the meets we are attending.  Swim meets in our region fill up extremely fast, so please make sure to sign your swimmers up as soon as each meet opens.

One area I would like to see our group improve on is attendance.  This past month our group only averaged 52% attendance.  Just like in school, attendance is extremely important to success.  A student with great attendance has a better chance at success, and so does a swimmer with great attendance.  Also, I want to make sure you are aware that, beginning in the Junior II group, swimmers have practice on Saturday from 8:00AM-10:00AM.  Even though overall we did not have very good attendance, one swimmer had perfect attendance. I would

like to congratulate Paige and her family for making swim practice a priority this past month and for making it to every single practice.  Awesome job!

This past month we had two new additions to our group and would like to welcome Annalyse andKylie to the Junior IIs.  Annalyse and Kylie will be with us two days a week in hopes of swimming full-time with the Junior II group soon.  Great job girls!

Lastly, we made huge improvements with our test sets this past month.  Araceli, Paige, Franco, and Jared each passed all three Junior II test sets, and many other swimmers like Samantha, Jacqueline, andJulia made big steps forward.  Amazing work you all!  Please see the Junior II chart to see your swimmers attendance and their test set improvements.  Overall, it was a great month, and I am looking forward to see where this month will take us!

Coach Lisa

Pre-Senior - What a busy month! We’ve had 2 swim meets with many best times. Some highlights from the meets include Gabe getting his first JO cuts in the 50 and 100 Back, Hunter and Xander had 100% best times, and watching many people execute great race plans. We’ve had great improvement on our test sets this month! We broke down the free test set into more manageable sets, added more of a challenge in our kick set (several swimmers had to get out early and that is why there is missing data), and we got to swim our IM test set in the competition pool. I’m very excited about our last 2 meets before Junior Olympics, watching more cuts swum.  We’ve been practicing JO relays and will have several more chances to have trial swims to see if we can swim into thetop 16 at practice! Remember, get to practice, try hard, encourage others around you, and have fun!

Coach Leslie

October was a busy month for the varsity group. We had several swimmers participate in the Hayward and Orinda meets. Congratulations to Emily, Kyle, and Katelyn for swimming their first LAC meets. They all achieved B times or better. Congratulations also to Jessica and Sydney for dropping their times and challenging themselves with new swims.

Attendance for the month of October improved as well. I feel as a group, we can do better.

Senior Group:

October was a great month of training for the Senior group.  Special recognition to Alex G. for being swimmer of the month, getting three best times at the Marin meet and making over 90% attendance.  Also Shelby D. had 100% attendance and qualified for the Washington meet in two events.  We have been doing great on our kick as all but one member of the group has now passed the kick test set.  We also have been getting better in dryland (thanks Coach Kevin), and it is paying off in the pool.  Alex G., Alex W., Megan F., Shelby D., Shahini A., Sarah S., Celine N., Jared B., Bryce M., Stephen M., Josh L, and Brandon S. have all attained best times already this season and most of the kids have not rested yet.  We are very excited about competing at 14&un JO’s, Washington, and Junior Nationals in Tennessee at the end of this month and in the beginning of December.  Congratulations to Nina H. for her scholarship offer to Santa Barbara and for being recruited by UCLA.  Congratulations also to Shelby S. for being recruited by Azuza Pacific University, Chapman College, and the University of San Diego.
