Under un-seasonably warm weather the Desert Thunder Seniors and Age Groupers lit up the pool with fast personal and relay swims.
Two team records fell, both in the Breaststroke disciplines. First, Nathan Calmese broke his own team record in the 8 year old Boys' 100 Breast, which he set back at the Fall Festival Championships in mid-November. With his goggles wrapped under his nose he still raced his way to a 1:40.98. When Nathan originally broke the team record in November he took the record from Ian McIlraith, who during his time with DTAC, dominated the age group record books.
The second team record came from Vincent Hemingway as he broke Andrew Rangel's 12 year old Boys' 200 Breaststroke. Rangel's record of 2:41.03 was taken off the books with Hemingway's 2:36.57.
On the Senior side of the pool Simon Werkhoven led the way on the improvement side with 100% best times. This was quite a feat as Simon competed in 8 individual events over the course of the weekend. Cody Stalcup also had a high rate of improvement as he dropped in all his events, except for his primary races, in which he set best times only 4 weeks ago at high school state champs. Cody produced the highest finish on that side of the pool with a 3rd place finish in the 50 fly. Cory Basselen and Julia Boese joined Cody as the three Seniors with top 8 finishes. Also scoring for the team were Justin Dawson, Phi Nguyen, and Tyler Beardsley.
The team on the Age Group side of the pool produced approximately 75% best times over the course of the meet. Relay performances were exciting as almost every relay team member performed even with or faster than their personal best times in their respective relay legs.
Age Group finalists included Tanner Komlodi, Dylan Edge, Archie Spindler, and Vincent Hemingway.
Congratulations to all the Desert Thunder Holiday Festival swimmers for a great team effort. It was a true pleasure to oversee such a great meet.
Next up: the Age Groupers and some Seniors will attend RIO's Toy Drive Benefit swim meet on Dec 15th, while some Seniors will attend a Senior Circuit meet in Tucson.
