Youth Swimming: NVST shines at Pacific 14U Championships

Eleven swimmers from the Napa Valley Swim Team recently competed at Pacific Swimming’s 14-and-under Championship Swim Meet, held Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in Morgan Hill. More than 1,300 swimmers competed in this meet, where for three days straight the rain never stopped.
In the girls 9-10 age division, Ellie Montoro achieved 100 percent best times and three new Far Western cuts. Montoro earned new Far Western cuts in the 50 breaststroke (41.09), 100 breaststroke (1:28.07), taking off four seconds, and the 50 butterfly (34.78). Montoro also earned best times in the 50 backstroke (36.69), 100 fly (1:23.52 and 100 individual medley (1:19.68).
In the boys 9-10 age division, Michael Izzi competed in his first Junior Olympics. He had a great 200 freestyle (2:33.80) and took off over four seconds. Barrett McMichael swam to a top final finish of seventh in the 100 fly with a time of 1:10.98, taking off over three seconds. McMichael also swam to a sixth-place consolation final in the 50 fly in a best time of 33:13. He also earned two new Far Western cuts in the 100 free (1:06.05) and 50 back (36.15). McMichael also earned a best time in the 100 IM (1:15.29). Iona Pascual swam to a fifth-place top final in the 200 free. Pascual had a good preliminary swim (2:19), but in finals he was on fire and swam a 2:16.68, taking over four seconds off his entry time. Pascual also earned a new personal record time in the 200 free and a new Far Western cut in the 100 free (1:04.39). He also swam to a best time in the 100 IM (1:15.29).
In the girls 11-12 age division, Emily Dusky finished the 50 breaststroke in a time of 35.49. Also qualifying for this swim meet was Rebecca Reynolds, who due to the extremely inclement weather was unable to compete.
In the boys 11-12 age division, Jack Montoro competed in the 200 fly where, in the prelims, swam a 2:24.72 — a 10 -second drop from his entered time of 2:34.37. Montoro then took another second off of his morning swim when he competed in the consolation finals and swam a 2:23.71 for a seventh-place finish. This finish time earned Montoro a new PRT time. Montoro also competed in the 500 free and 50 fly. Cayd Roberts swam the 100 breaststroke, where he broke the 1:12 barrier with a 1:11.80 in consolation finals, and a sixth-place finish. Roberts also placed seventh in consolations in the 50 breaststroke (33.52) and a new PRT in the event. Roberts also earned a best time in the 100 IM with a 1:05.84. Also qualifying for this swim meet was Nicholas Cisco, who qualified in the 200 freestyle, but was unable to compete due to the extremely inclement weather on Sunday.
In the girls 13-14 age division, Grace Murphy competed in the 100 breaststroke and Olivia Ha-Hoang swam the 100 free.
In the boys 13-14 age division, Quinn McMichael achieved a best time (2:22.52) in the 200 fly.
