Fast Swimming, Records fall at Dutchman Invite!

Fast swimming from Desert Thunder Aquatics at Lost Dutchman Invite!

This past weekend, 43 members of Desert Thunder attended the 2013 Lost Dutchman Invite, a three and half day event with 1100 swimmers participating. Throughout the event, Desert Thunder swimmers put up fast, championship qualifying, and some times record breaking performances.

Overall, both the seniors and age group swimmers had a meet that met and surpassed expectations.  Improvements for all sessions ranged from 74% to 100% personal best times.

In the senior open tank, 16-year-old Alec Lezcano blazed the way, winning two events, finishing 3rd in two more, and 6th in one to win the 3rd place high point award for the division. Along the way, Alec earned three sectional qualifying automatic times in his 200 backstroke (1:57.00), his 100 backstroke (53.21) and his 100 freestyle (47.76) and a bonus qualification in his 100 butterlfy (53.30).  In addition, Alec set a new 15-16 boys 200 backstroke record and tied the 15-16 boys team record in the 50 butterfly (23.45).  Alec completed the meet with 100% best times.

Also swimming well from the senior side, Julia Boese finished a strong 2nd place in her 200 freestyle, while qualifying for the bonus qualification for Sectionals in a time of 1:56.77. Julia went on to finish top 8 in all her events, including a 3rd place in the women’s 100 Free (54.39). Other top eight finalists in the Senior Open field included Seth Moore and Cody Stalcup. Cody also earned a bonus qualification for his 50 free swim with a time of 22.35. Finishing in the top 16 for the seniors were Phi Nyugen and Justin Dawson.

In the 13-14-age bracket, Jacob Garcia was the big point scorer, with two first place finishes in the 50 free (23.00) and 50 breaststroke (29.10). Jacob’s time in his 50 breaststroke and that of his in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.64) were new DTAC 13-14 team records. Levi Siwek and Sierra Bigelow also contributed to top eight finishes, and points for the team.

For the Age group swimmers, the meet started off with 100% best times in the 500’s on Friday night from Corinne and Tanner Komlodi, Archie Sprindler, Vincent Hemingway, Edda Anderson, and Dylan Edge.  The time drops were enormous!

Swimming in the finals were Corinne and Tanner Komlodi, Dylan Edge, Archie Spindler, Ally Carr, Edda Anderson, Vincent Hemingway, Zach Larntz, Marina McInelly, and Alex Grolle.  Vincent, Corinne, Tanner, Dylan, Archie, Edda, and Marina each had at least one race in the Championship Final. Amanda Foley completed the meet with 100% personal best times.

Spindler staked his independent spot in the record books with a team record swim of 1:07.05 in the 100 IM to break a record that had stood since 2001.

Congratulations to the Desert Thunder swimmers for an amazing team performance at the 2013 Lost Dutchman!
