Charlie Adams and Charlie Barrett swam in miserable weather during the recent storms at the Pacific Swimming Short Course Junior Olympic Championship meet in Morgan Hill. It was so bad that on Sunday morning everyone was greeted by a mass of mangled tents that had been blown to pieces by the wind overnight. Over 1300 swimmers from all over Northern California and beyond were in attendance. Along with them were parents, officials and coaches. So there was little space on the deck. It was difficult to get from the warm-up pool to the competitive area.
Charlie Adams is still in the first year as an 11-12 swimmer. He competed in the maximum of 9 events which all had very difficult qualifying times. He has had a great year of swimming and continued that in this meet. Charlie improved his time in four of his events and was very close in all of his other ones. He beat his own team record in the 1650 free with a time of 20:14.87 to place 10th and a new Far Western time. He also beat his own team record in the 400 IM with a time of 5:20.69. He broke 2:30 in the 200 IM with a time of 2:29.49 and 2:10 in the 200 free with a time of 2:09.89.
Charlie Barrett has had a remarkable few years of swimming improving greatly to currently hold several team records in backstroke and IM races. This was his last meet in the 13-14 age group. He is about to enter his first year of high school swimming. In the last year, Charlie has gone from being qualified for one race in this meet to qualifying for nearly all of the events. Now he gets to start all over again in his new age group.
