Christopher Ramsey, CEO of USA Water Polo, guest speaker for Olympic discussion
Christopher Ramsey, CEO of USA Water Polo, guest speaker for Olympic discussion at NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis, IN.

Huntington Beach, Calif. – March 7, 2013—  Ramsey was invited to speak on a panel discussing the growth of Olympic Sport and opportunities for student-athletes with disabilities. Joined at the conference by NCAA President Mark Emmert and USOC CEO Scott Blackmun, along with more than 400 NCAA staffers and leaders of the Olympic movement, the day-long event was an opportunity to reflect on the role of Olympic sports in the context of collegiate athletics.

Ramsey was asked to describe water polo’s rise as one of the nation’s most popular emerging sports.  This year alone, three colleges will launch six varsity water polo teams: Emmanuel College, Georgia, Monmouth College, Illinois and Notre Dame College, Ohio are all adding men’s and women’s water polo.

Among the reasons water polo is attracting the interest of colleges and universities are high Athlete Progress Ratings (APR), low cost implementation, low injury rate, and the potential to enhance admission numbers.  With the growth of women’s water polo, a program can help attain or maintain Title IX compliance.  The popularity of water polo at the Olympics in London was also cited, where all the matches were sold out, and where Team USA captured its first Olympic gold medal in women’s water polo.

"Water polo is one of many Olympic sports that can broaden a college’s or university’s athletic portfolio,” said Ramsey.  “Olympic sports bring a rich tradition, highly motivated student athletes and modest operational costs.  In the case of water polo, a strong collegiate club system also means that programs can be easily converted to varsity status.”

More than 1000 high schools compete in water polo nationwide.  Most recently the states of Tennessee and Georgia adopted water polo as an official high school sport.
