Rio 2016™ has a new home
Modular construction reinforces modernity and sustainability aspects
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 11th March 2013: The Organising Committee for the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games has a new home. A modern, sustainable, accessible structure, located in Rio de Janeiro’s Cidade Nova neighbourhood, will house the Rio 2016™ and Municipal Olympic Company’s Teams until the celebration of the Games. Modular technology was used in the construction that occupies an area of 20.938m2. It is an intelligent system that permits a faster assembly and the possibility of dismantling and reusing the modules after Games-Time.
The President of the Organising Committee for the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, explains that the new headquarters are the first venue to be delivered by the Organising Committee. “Seeing the first Games venue ready reinforces our ability to achieve. Furthermore, having all teams gathered in a single building, together with the Municipal Olympic Company, makes our task easier and helps to integrate the teams”. The President also adds that the project has sustainability as its basic premise. “Modernity and sustainability mark the new headquarters. The modular construction is an innovation that better suits our project. We will use the building according to the Committee’s growth demands and, in the end, it will be possible to dismantle the structure, to reuse it elsewhere”.
The building has rainwater harvesting and energy saving systems as well as furniture made of certified wood. The air conditioning system is equipped with electromagnetic components for the reduction of energy costs and temperature control by zone. There is a LED-equipped lighting system, with low energy use, besides reflective glass permitting a better natural light use. Solar energy capturing panels and a thermo acoustic cover will also be used as part of the project.
Accessibility was also carefully considered while developing this project. The building is equipped with ramps and elevators that meet all necessary requirements, such as Braille signposting and tactile floor for orientation.
As the project is the first Rio 2016™ venue, an Integrated Security Plan will be implemented, a model that will be used in all Rio 2016™ Games sports and non-sports venues. The plan is the result of a partnership with Security and Civil Defence organisations and representatives of the Fire Department, Municipal Guard and Civil and Military Police will be present on site.
To occupy the building, Rio 2016™ is in order with all the necessary licences. The building already has an acceptance certificate, a document needed to occupy venues like this, and a certificate of approval issued by the Rio de Janeiro State Fire Department (CBERJ in Portuguese). The venue went beyond the requirements for a temporary building and, apart from basic security procedures, an automatic sprinklers network equipped with smoke detectors was also installed.
