Hein Breaks 4-time Olympic Gold Medalist’s State Record
At the ISI Age Group Championships on Friday, March 8 – Sunday, March 10, DCST swimmers set 1 Illinois Age Group State Record and 9 team records. Daniel Hein led the way in the record breaking performances when he set the State Record in the 100 yard Backstroke for Boys Ages 13 – 14 with a time of 51.03 seconds. The previous record of 51.85 seconds was set by Matt Grevers of Lake Forest. Grevers currently has gone on to win 4 Olympic gold medals including the 100 meter backstroke at the 2012 Olympic Games. In addition to his 100 yard Backstroke, Daniel set team records in the 50 yard Backstroke, 200 yard Backstroke (1st place finish), 100 yard Butterfly (2nd place finish) and 200 yard Butterfly (1st place finish). In his other event, Hein finished 3rd in the 50 yard Freestyle.
Also in the 13 – 14 Year Old Boys age group, Jacob Bjork set 3 team records in the 50 yard Breaststroke, 100 yard Breaststroke (5th place finish) and 200 yard Breaststroke (4th place finish). Jacob had one other swim in finals where he took 8th place in the 200 yard Freestyle. Bjork and Hein also teamed up with Tyler Hull and Tyler Schultz to set the team record in the 400 Medley Relay while placing 9th.
DCST also set a team relay record in the 11 – 12 year old Girls 400 Medley Relay by swimmers Athena Ye, Abby Pardridge, Sarah Hein and Grace Flemming. They placed 15th. Athena Ye also had four top 8 place finishes in her individual events. She was 5th in the 50 yard Butterfly, 6th in the 50 yard Backstroke, 6th in the 100 yard Backstroke and 7th in the 200 yard IM.
Sarah Fergus set DCST’s other team record with her time in the 13 – 14 year old girls 100 yard Backstroke with her 9th place finish. Nolan Fergus had a perfect meet by achieving 6 career best times in all 6 of his individual events including two top 8 place finishes in the 100 yard Backstroke (7th place) and 50 yard Butterfly (7th place) in the Boys Ages 9 – 10 age group.
As a team, DCST had 30 career best individual swims out of a total of 56 swims for a 54% improvement rate. The swimmers listed below had a better than 50% improvement rate:

In team scoring, DCST finished tied for 27th in the Girls Division, 13th in the Boys Division, and 19th in the Combined Division out of the 92 teams entered in the meet.
