New Mark Stingrays Swim-a-Thon FAQs


New Mark Stingrays announce Swim-A-Thon™!


This year instead of our cookie dough fundraiser, we are going to hold a Swim-A-Thon™!  There will be many prizes for fundraising and laps swum, and lots of fun at the Swim-A-Thon™ event.   You can use our team website to send donation requests to family and friends easily, by importing your electronic address books, and sending emails.  Those you contact can then donate to your swimmer(s) online, or you can collect money in person or by mail. 


If you would like to help with the planning of the  Swim-A-Thon™ event or volunteer at the event, please contact Ann Stepp ( or Kris Roberts( You can sign up to volunteer the day of the events on the website under Events; Team Functions – each of the two events will be listed and you can sign up for jobs just like you do for meets!  We need lap counters, registration and food workers!


This will be a fun event for the kids – we’ll have food, drinks and music!



Q:  What are the prizes?


A:  We hope to have lots of prizes to keep you motivated to raise money and swim hard!  But at this point the plans include:


Top Fundraiser Overall: $250 VISA Gift Card

2nd Highest Fundraiser Overall: $100 VISA Gift Card

3rd Highest Fundraiser: $50 VISA Gift Card

(this award is determined per swimmer)


Top Age Group: Ice Cream Sundae Party!!!


Top Lap Swimmers each age group: present American flag at a home meet


For each $50 raised per family, get an entry in a drawing for many fantastic prizes,

Q: When is the event?

A: June 7th and June 14th during the Friday Fun Swims. You will be assigned a date according to your age group, but if you can’t make your assigned date, you may switch.  Money will be due by the end of June.


Q: How far do I have to swim? What if my swimmer is a Rookie and can’t swim very far?

A: There will be a time limit for swimmers by age group. We will work with the coaches to set reasonable limits and swimmers can rest, take breaks as needed, and swim at their own pace. Swimmers may also use kickboards for all or part of their swim.


Q: What if I have more than one swimmer participating?  Do they each get the prizes?

A: The top fundraiser awards are by swimmer.  The “raffle” prizes are per family.  You should decide as a family if you are going for the top fundraiser awards or not.  If you are, we suggest asking donors to give all their donations to one swimmer.  You will have to put this in your email you send out – the website will give them the option to split their donation across your family.  We cannot turn that option off for individual families. Each swimmer will get a participation patch.


Q: Is participation mandatory?

A: We are asking each family to either raise money through the Swim-A-Thon™ or buyout their participation.  You are required to raise or buyout is as follows:

Family with 1 swimmer: $40

Family with 2 swimmers: $70

Family with 3 or more swimmers: $100

You may do the Swim-a-Thon and if your fundraising does not meet the minimum required, you can pay the difference to meet it. 

Remember that donations to the Swim-a-thon are tax deductible.


Q: When can I start asking for pledges?

A:  You can start as soon as you want, but we recommend starting by the middle of May.  Please try out the website set-up this week if possible, as we will be available during in-person registration April 7th to answer your questions.  There are help videos available within the site.

Q: Does all the money go to the Stingrays?

A:   95% of our fundraising revenue goes directly to our team.  Our Swim-A-Thon™ is officially registered with USA Swimming.  In doing this, we agree to pay a nominal fee to the USA Swimming Foundation of 5% of the gross revenue from our Swim-a-Thon event.  The fee that is paid to the USA Swimming Foundation supports its mission to save lives and build champions—in the pool and in life. The USA Swimming Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of USA Swimming. Whether they’re equipping our children with the life-saving skill of learn-to-swim through their Make a Splash initiative, or providing financial support to our heroes on the U.S. National Team, the USA Swimming Foundation aims to provide the wonderful experience of swimming to kids at all levels across the country.  For more information on the USA Swimming Foundation, please visit  Make sure you mention this in your solicitation emails! Q: Is New Mark Swim Team a non-profit?

A: Yes.  We have a 501(c)3 number.  All donations to the Swim-a-Thon are tax deductible (of course, we recommend consulting your tax advisor).  If your company matches donations to non-profit organizations please consider having them match your donation.


Q: Can family and friends donate directly online? 

A: Of course! Just send them an email from your page.  This will give them a link to your page and they can donate.  They will also be able to donate to your entire family or just one swimmer – whatever they choose.  (You should direct them in your email if you want them to donate to just one for prize purposes.) There is a $3.99 fee to donate with a credit card online.  The donor pays this fee.  If you they (or you) have a problem with this, you can collect cash or check from them and turn that in to us by the end of June.  You can also enter this donation online yourself to make sure you get credit for it.
