NCS High School Highlights

NCS Trial & Finals, May 17 & 18

There are around 150 high school teams eligible to compete in NCS, however, only a little over 100 are able to make the cuts. Each event maxes out with the fastest 40 entries to compete in Friday’s trials events where no points are scored. The top 16 finishers in each event on Friday’s trials get to come back on Saturday to compete in NCS finals for points.

EBAT had several participants in NCS trials on Friday. The following are some highlights…….

NCS Trials:

200 Medley Relay

Laura Macchiavello lead off her relay and split a 30.13, while Lucianna Balica anchored the freestyle leg and split a 25.20. The girls’ team took 33rd and went a 1:57.92!  Great Job!

Carson Sand was the only EBAT swimmer on his relay, where he split a 26.23 in the breastroke leg. The team went a 1:35.41 and was in 9th position going into finals. Good swims!

Victor Deng went a 21.85 and barely made it in to finals with a 16th place! Great job, Victor!

100 Free

Lauren Wirdzek swam a 55.08 and got 38th place! Good swim, Lauren! Victor Deng also swam this event and went a 49.35 and got 35th! Lots of tough competition at this meet.

Amanda Houston rallied a great effort at this event and went a 5:21.73. She ended up with 35th place. Great job, Amanda! Kate Miller was our other distance swimmer in this event as she placed 25th with a  5:15.11. Good effort, Kate!

200 Free Relay

Castro Valley’s girls’ 200 free relay had three EBAT swimmers participating in this event. Lucianna Balica lead off with a 25.30, Kate Miller went 3rd and split a 25.74, and Lauren Wirdzek anchored with a 25.56. The team got a 1:42.07 and tied for 24th place. Nice job, ladies! Paige Heacox lead off the Foothill High relay with a 25.32. Her team came in one place before CV’s at 23rd! Good Race!

The boys also had three EBAT swimmers. Victor Deng lead off with a 22.36, Donovan Watts, going 2nd, split a 22.22, and Newton Tran went 3rd and split a 21.92! Nice swim, boys. They finished 10th with a 1:28.57.

100 Breastroke

Rebecca Horpel made the top 40 to compete at NCS, but unfortunately came down with pneumonia earlier in the week. This was too bad as she swam a best time the week before at high school champs and I believe she could’ve gone faster if she swam her race a little differently, which was going to be the plan at NCS. Sadly, she had to scratch that event.

Carson Sand dropped some more time from his previous week’s performance and went a 57.49, finishing 6th going into finals. Great job!

400 Free Relay

The Castro Valley girls call this 400 free relay the “dream team” because it’s all EBAT swimmers! Leading off the relay was Lucianna Balica who got a best time with a 54.83. Laura Macchiavello went 2nd and split a 55.66. Kate Miller went 3rd and split a 54.78, and Lauren Wirdzek anchored and went a 54.42! They just missed the cut for finals as they finished 17th with a 3:39.68. Great effort, ladies!

Carson Sand lead off his relay with a best time of 47.99. Victor Deng went 3rd, splitting a 48.18. The team finished 7th with a 3:11.94. Great job, boys!

NCS Finals

200 Medley Relay

Carson Sand swam the breastroke leg and split a 26.40. The team went a 1:36.36 ( a little faster than Friday) and moved up a place to 3rd in consols (consolation heat 9th-16th), which was 11th over all.

200 IM

Carson Sand then swam a 1:57.35, a little slower than the previous day, and ended up 14th overall. Great job, Carson!

50 Free

Victor Deng squeaked into finals at 16th place. He finished 16th place with a 22.33, scoring points for CV High. Nice swim, Victor!

200 Free Relay

Going in tied for 10th, this was going to be a tough race. Victor Deng lead off with a 21.86. Donovan Watts split a 22.03, and Newton Tran split a 22.00. Overall, they placed 11th with a 1:27.95 which was a little faster than the day before. Great race, boys!

100 Breastroke

Carson Sand, who was seeded 6th in this event learned the night before that this was going to be the fastest high school 100 breastroke heat in the country for this year. Little did any of us know that this was to be the fastest high school 100 breastroke heat in USA history! This is because the top 3 swimmers broke the National High School record in this event. Each year, we are lucky to see a new NCS record or two broken. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a national record broken, so witnessing 3 swimmers breaking a national record all in the same heat was incredible. I think it’s safe to say that I doubt any of us will witness anything like that ever again. Anyway, Carson had a great race, holding on to his 6th place and improving his time even more to an All American Automatic qualifying time of 56.99!  Great job, Carson! I know being part of this amazing heat of swimmers will go down as one of your most memorable! Here is a link to paste into your browser if you would like to see this event. Carson is 2nd from the top in the silver cap.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meXdK7ouGEo

400 Free Relay

Switching up the order a little bit, Victor Deng lead off the relay with a 48.38.Carson Sand went 3rd and split a 48.17. The relay ended up 8th with a 3:11.90. Great Job, boys! The CV Boys’ Team took 13th place overall. Congrats!

Great Job to all the EBAT high school swimmers! You guys did a great job all season long - training and racing hard. Enjoy this short time off as summer swimming will be quick and intense!
