KAZAN, Russia – Canada’s Senior National B team placed fourth in the team event on Monday in synchronized swimming competition at the 2013 Summer Universiade.

Russia won the gold medal with 98.010 points, Japan was second at 92.570 and the U.S. was third at 86.340.

The Canadians followed at 83.940 with Janelle Ball (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC), Gabriella Brisson (Calgary, AB), Rachel Fréchette (Deux-Montagnes, QC), Caroline Larcher-Landry (Gatineau, QC), Rebecca Maule (Guelph, ON), Katie MacLeod (Pointe-Claire, QC), Samantha Nealon (Morriston, ON) and Lisa Sanders (Gormley, ON).

“We are extremely pleased with our showing today,” said Ball.  “We faced a very tough field against athletes with Olympic and world championship experience.  We knew it would be tough to climb up the standings so our podium was to execute well the elements which had been a challenge for us in practice.”

Team Russia, Japan and USA have at least four athletes who took part in the 2012 Olympic Games or 2012 Olympic Qualifier.

The team of eight athletes interpreted the “Soccer” routine for the technical program and “Circus” for the free on Mondaythat were presented first by the Senior National Team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Synchro competition at the Games ends Tuesday with the solo final, featuring Nealon who was sixth after Friday’s technical program. This is the first time synchronized swimming is an official sport at the Games.
