The afterglow of a state championship...

Sitting in the afterglow of the state meet, I can’t wait to share the results of the 14 & Under Long Course State Championship meet in Savannah, GA.

Let me assure you the “afterglow” I speak of has nothing to do with the chloromenes that remain in our eyes, nasal passages, bronchial tubes, suits, hair and skin!  Despite the air & water quality, coughing fits that woke us up in the middle of the night, watering eyes, lost voices, sneezing attacks;  threats of cancelled meets, pool evacuations, inspections from the fire department, health department and “Haz Mat” team, SCAT swimmers “just kept swimming”!

This championship meet was a bigger challenge than any “worst case scenario” set that we could have given your swimmer on deck at practice.  In true SCAT fashion, none of this stopped our swimmers from achieving personal bests and medal-winning finishes!

The meet was on a path to success after Nick Palmer’s medal finish on Thursday evening in the 1500 Freestyle.  Achieving a AAAA time, 3rd place medal and a personal best, Nick set the rest of the team on a course of “greatness”!    I give special recognition to our distance swimmers that often have to find a place of great interior motivation as they often swim in an “empty” cheering section, yet must share a lane with another competitor,  in an early or late session to a quiet pool,  that lacks the excitement of the sprints and finals that occur in a Championship Finals meet.  Nick consistently leads his teammates in this fashion.   I called him the “quad A Kid” this weekend as he continually reached his goals of best times and AAAA cuts!

Following Thursday nights 1500, Tan Dunn, Donna Blaum and Arion Solomon certainly made the crowds notice as they swam to repeated 1st place finishes!   Tan ended the meet with five 1st place medals, and Arion and Donna each earned 1st in their 50 and 100 Freestyles!

It is so difficult to single out only 1st place winners as we had so many others that earned top 8 finals: Gabe Bartolomei took home a Silver and Bronze medal in the 200 and 50 Back in addition to 5 additional top 10 times.   Cassidy Klekot finished 4th & 7th in the 100 Breast and 50 Fly and Alyson Phinney earned a 6th place finish in her 50 free!

Tommy Ennis, Rachel Goldblatt and Samantha Schmid not only competed in individual events, but helped their teammates finish 3rd & 4th respectively in the team relays!

Our 10 & Under teammates proved their place on the team as Morgan Stroud, Sammi Lucich, Summer How, Nanami Lillie, Josiah Solomon, Michael and Kenzie Tucker all reached personal best times!   Ethan Humphrey joined the team this year and has qualified in breaststroke in both State Championships!

The fun doesn’t end here as our Seniors will travel next week to Athens, GA for the Senior State Championship and Tan Dunn and Arion Solomon will travel to Greenville, SC the following week to represent the state of Georgia as they have been selected for the Zone Championship!

We congratulate all the 14 & Under swimmers and wish the Seniors the same continued success!
