The 2013 Speedo Far Western Long Course Championship Swim Meet hosted by West Coast Aquatics was held at Independence High School’s Frank Fiscalini Swim Center from July 31 to August 4, 2013. This competition attracted over 1800 elite age group swimmers from all over the world.  It is an accomplishment to be able to swim at Far Westerns, as the Far Western qualifying times are faster than Junior Olympic Qualifying times.

Islanders who qualified to swim this year were:

9-10 Girls:  Hannah Boles, Ella Hidalgo, Amanda Hoang, Sophie Klube, and Audrey Tran.

11-12 Boys:  Ian Ordinario

13-14 Girls:  Catherine Boles, Julianna Cardenas, Maddy Delore, and Laura Fornshell.

17-18 Girls:  Rebecca Krause

17-18 Boys:  Morgan Truong.  It was a bittersweet meet for Morgan, who competed for the last time as an Islander.  Morgan, who was been an Islander for over 8 years, graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School, and will begin his studies at UC Irvine this fall.  While we are so proud of Morgan, he will definitely be missed!

14 year olds Catherine Boles and Laura Fornshell swam fast enough to swim in the evening finals:

Catherine competed in 4 races, and qualified to swim in the finals in 3 of those races.  Catherine took 2nd place in both the 100m and 200m Back, and then dropped 40 seconds to win the 800m Freestyle by over 8 seconds, finishing the race in 9:11.83.  Catherine finishes the season ranked #1 in Pacific Swimming in the event, and established a new Islander record by over 15 seconds as well.

Laura qualified to swim in the finals in the 200m Freestyle, finishing in 5th place, in a time of 2:09.75.

The 13-14 Girls 200m Medley Relay team, composed of Catherine Boles (Backstroke), Julianna Cardenas (Breastroke), Maddy Delore (Butterfly), and Laura Fornshell (Freestyle), finished in a very respectable 5th place, in a new Islander record time of 2:07.18.

But the Islander relay of the meet had to be the 9-10 Girls 200m Medley Relay (pictured above with Coach Linda), composed of Hannah Boles (Backstroke), Sophie Klube (Breastroke), Audrey Tran (Butterfly), and Ella Hidalgo (Freestyle), which also finished in 5th place in their age group, in a new Islander record time of 2:33.34.  See how the girls won their heat, leading from start to finish (the Islanders were in Lane 4 - 4 lanes from the left, and 4 lanes from the top of the screen):

Congratulations to all of the Islander swimmers - we are so proud of all of you!
